Andrew Scruton is the co-ordinator for the New Alternate Program starting in September for Terrace. New alternate program to start TERRACE — A New Alternate Program will be in Terrace, starting September of 1986. Andrew Scruton, director of instruction for ‘‘Special Services” for School District 88 (Terrace), is the coor- dinator for Terrace’s New Alternate Program. This second alternate program will comple- ment Terrace Alternate Program (TAP). However, instead of helping students who have dropped out of the Junior Secondary Schools and wish to re- enter school the new alternate program will help students for whom re-entry into'the school system is not a high priority. Scruton said that many of the students in the new alternate pro- gram have adjustment problems and may be in conflict with the law. The goal of this new pro- gram is to teach a prac- tically oriented life skills curriculum and help these young people become contributing members of society. In order to measure the suc- cess of the program, Scruton said, we will be looking to the students not to commit further offenses, to reduce dependency on the social agencies by the students » by stabilizing the living situation and_ to eliminate alcohol and drug dependency. When students enter the program, Scruton added, they will be ex- pected to be responsible. Their responsibilities will be outlined in a three month contract which can be renewed a max- imum of three times. This contract will em- _phasize regular atten- dance, appropriate behavior and completion of assigned tasks. Also, Scruton said if the stu- dent repeats an offense that involves him or her with the law appropriate consequences will follow. Assigned to this new alternate program will be two staff; a teacher from School District 88 and a child ‘care worker ‘sup- plied by the Ministry of the Attorney General. The teacher, Scruton said, will be responsible for overall program direction, initial assess- ment and screening pro- cedures, the academic program and student discipline. The child care worker will provide liaison be- tween the program, the work experience compo- nent, other agencies such as the Ministry of Human Resources, Man- power, Alcohol and Drug Counselling, and the parents, This person would also assist the ‘teacher aS necessary in general program ac- tivities. that Heinrich and Waterland J Cabinet ] it Five B.C. cabinet ministers will be stop- ping in Terrace on May 21 as part of an information-gathering tour of northwestern B.C. Education kits introduced - TERRACE — The prevention of child sex- ual abuse is a pressing need in today’s society. Principal of Uplands Elementary School, Nancy Nelson, feels that education on the subject is the most promising avenue of approach. Studies show that a child who is properly inform- ed about sexual abuse is less likely to become a victim than an uninform- ed child. If prevention through education is to take place ‘on a scale that is effec- tive, instruction on sex- ual abuse must be a part of every child’s safety training. To ensure that children receive this safe- ty training Uplands Elementary School has been involved in a pro- gram of personal safety called the C.A.R.E. Kit. The goal of the pro- gram is to encourage and promote the rights of children, with special Court report In Terrace provincial court on Friday, April 25, Andreaus Mulldoe was fined $35 for an of- fense under the Liquor Control Act. emphasis on the prevep- tion of sexual abuse.
