BUILDING DEPARTMENT The primary purpose of the Building Department is to regulate building within the City. The use and occupancy of buildings is reviewed to ensure health and safety regulations are maintained. The Building Department also provides a service to others through construction knowledge, technical information and by establishing a uniform standard for building. The Building Department is fully responsible for issuing building, plumbing, building moving, swimming pools, stoves, fireplaces, demolition and sprinkler permits and partially responsible for sign permits and for business licenses. Our goal is to be a cost recoverable service. The department’s operating costs would not be unlike a enterprising non-profit organization. Liaison with other departments within the City is part of the Building Department function and could be summarized as follows: Assistance to the Planning Department: 1. Checks and processes site plans for one and two family detached buildings. 2. Assists in the administration of the sign bylaw through issuing permits, enforcement of regulations and providing information. 3, Advises the City Planner on building requirements within the scope of the Building Department Bylaws. 4. Inspections for strata title applications. Assistance to the Bylaw Department:. 1. Inspections of the buildings prior tu occupancy permit or license renewal. Investigate building nonconformities with the Chief Bylaw Officer. Assists with complaints that may require the Building Department. Appear in court when required by the City. Assistance to the Engineering Department: 1. Close liaison is required prior to issuing permits as well as when construction is in progress.
