Moved by Alderman Gates; Seconded by Alderman Keryluk WHEREAS door to door mail delivery in urban areas has always been an expected service; and WHEREAS the cost of postage has continued to rise in recent years. from 12 cents in 1978 to 37 cents in 1988 for first class letters with Canadian destinations; and WHEREAS the Government of Canada's supermailbox program has created and will continue to create second class citizens of British Columbia residents by failing to provide door-to-door delivery service in new subdivisions; and | . WHEREAS the supermailbox program will cause the percentage of . Canadian addresses receiving home delivery to drop from 54% in 1987 to 47% over. the next decade; and- | WHEREAS the continued decline of home delivery in urban areas would place a hardship on seniors and physically disabled citizens; and - WHEREAS tke consequent differences. in mail service to: urban homes | could: decrease the value of those residences without home - delivery; .
