His Worship Mayor Campbell advised that he had this date received a letter from Premier Barrett with regard te the decision of determining a location of the Regional Town Centre. The letter stated in part "I wish to assure you that I have no intention of becoming involved in the decision making process as to the location of the Regional Town Cantre. see-e. a copy of this letter to Mayor Tonn to assure you both that I have @ no opinion to express as to the location that is most suitable to Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam and like yourself am anxiously awaiting decision by the G.V.R.D.". | Mayor Campbell then spoke on the subject by first "blasting" The Herald and its Managing Editor, Mr. Ron Thody, for the report in the July 8th issue that a site for the Town Centre had already been picked. In giving background to the subject, Mayor Campbell advised that Mr. Thody had contacted him prior to the article going to press and that he, the Mayor, had asked that the story be held back until the matter vent to the G.V.R.D. meeting. Mr. Thody refused as he said he had it on good authority and that the Mayor had no right to control the press. Upon investigation, the Mayor determined that the rumor must have started because the Provincial Housing Department assured the existence of the new site proposed in Coquitlam as the central basis for drawing up the initial plans for the Burke Mountain Development. This was a Housing Department e directive for preliminary planning purposes only and in no way did it come from the G.V.R.D. ox from the Premier.
