Ministry of Forests records pegs the amount owed for logging on Crown land at $67 million as of November. That’s down almost 50 per cent from the $120 million owed last May. The total of stumpage ar- rears went steadily down after a flurry of media coverage last spring highlighted deadbeat log- ging companies. Sales down RESIDENTIAL housing sales in B.C. reflected the general malaise of the provincial economy in 1998, according to the B.C. Real Estate Association. The year saw 52,058 residential units sold under the Multiple Listing Service system, down significantly from 67,914 sold in 1997, Dollar value of MLS residential sales fell from $14.6 billion in 1997 to $10.9 billion last year. “For a long while we had a bull market fuelled by out- of-province and off-shore money,” association presi- dent Gerry Thiessen said. “That market is no longer with us. We are now in a more realistic market geared to local buyers and their in- comes.” of Who's Who in Executives and Prof2ssional, Saw sharpener gets recognition SKEENA CELLULOSE’s head filer will be appearing in the 1999 National Regis- ter’s Who's Who in Execu- tives and Professional. The register, which lists top Canadian business people, is recognizing John Simmons for reaching a level of recognizable suc- cess in the saw-filing field. Simmons started an ap- prenticeship as a saw filer in Prince George in 1974 after graduating from the Univer- sity of B.C. with a major in psychology. Alter graduation he said it was tough finding a job so. he decided to leam a trade. Ever since, Simmons’ career as a saw filer has taken off, After a two year ap- prenticeship program as a fitter, he earned a saw filer certificate in 1977 and be- came a certified benchman in 1978. He said he’s stuck with saw filing for 25 years be- cause it offers him a wide variety of things to do. “It’s more than just shar- pening saws,’’ he said. He said saw filers leam about metallurgy, welding, and engineering. They are also constantly discovering lew ways to process wood more effectively. Before taking the job as head filer at Skeena Cel- lulose two years ago, Sim- mons owned Sawtech, a company in Pouce Coupe that offered saw and chain sharpening and repair and supply services to industrial, commercial and home markets. His expertise in saw filing is in such high demand he has became an international consultant in saw technol- ogy. In the past ten years he has spent time troubleshooting - at sawmills in France, China and in almost every pro- vince -in Canada. In addi- tion, he’s taught saw tech- nology courses and given seminars across North America. Simmons is also noted for inventing a specialized centering device that has been manufactured and sold world-wide. Embarrassed about his celebrity, Simmons insists he doesn’t do anything spe- cial. “T don’t feel like I’m some expert,’ he said, ‘‘T just do what has to be done.”? . Simmons was included in the National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals becanse he was nominated by his peers. in just over a year more than 1. its our easiest plan ever —Sarah, Duchess al York lost weight on the 1¢2¢3 Success lan: 2.
