Support campaign to begin soon Library work FEW PEOPLE in Terrace were happier to see the sunshine return last week than ibrary board members and staff. Small wonder after parts of the library were drenched during the rain of Aug, 19. The roof is being replaced as part of the renovation project now under way. Unfortunately, only part one of the job — ripping the old roof off -- had been com- pleted when the heavens opened that Friday. As a result, the adult section had to be roped off and the shelves covered with tarps. However, explained board chairman Dan Gilgan, staff still went in to retrieve specific books requested by patrons, With sunshine still in the fore- cast going into last weekend, he Said the contractor is confidenl the roof would be ‘‘closed up in some fashion’? before the next rainfall, “Renovation is never easy,” Gilgan added. * Unlike carlier work, the parts of the project now being worked on ate more visible to passers-by, he noted. And that shift brings the board closer to the launching dale for its money raising efforts, Even after pruning the original project plans, the board had to agree to raise $87,000 in cash or kind in order to make the expan- sion financially possible, That translates to about $10,000 per board member. However, Gilgan pointed out, the board has two years in which to raise that money and has al- ready got off to a goad start. Local sawmills had donated necded lumber and the value of that in kind offering was approxi- mately one quarter of the total target Although the board has nat finalized all details of its campaign to raise the rest, he said a couple of ideas look like Strong possibilities. One is an adopt-a-bock pro- gram under which the library puts out a list of books purchased and the cost of each. Supporters can then make, a-.; donation equal to, the cost of 8 .; becomes visible - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 31, 1994 - A3 News NOW THAT work on the library expansion has moved to framing, progress is becoming all the more visibie, And with that increased visibility will soon come a library board campaign to raise the nearly $90,000 it needs to flesh out construction of the expanded facility. In Brief Petition handed in. A LOCAL woman who wants the federal government to stop taxing child support payments has now presented her pelition to local MP Mike Scott. Darlene Gagnon began her campaign this spring with let- ters to B.C. Members of Par- liament and by circulating the petition. It now numbers 408 names, the majority of which are from Terrace. She says parents receiving child support payments often pay one-third of that in in- come tax with the result that monies left over are in- adequate 1o provide for the |. children in their care. The issue became prominent this spring when a Quebec woman won a court case al- lowing her to keep all of her support payments. It’s now under appeal by the federal government. Phoning geis complicated IT’S GOING to take more number-punching to make long distance calls within the province beginning Sept 4. Callers are going to have to include B.C.’s area code of 64. Notice specific book. The gift will be recognized by stamping the donor’s name in the book. Noting similar programs have worked elsewhere, Gilgan said the library spends $75,000 a year on new publications. Being able to free up some of that money for the building pro- ject would be a big help. And with new shelving having been one of the items lost to cost cutting measures, the board will now be seeking sponsors to pur- chase shelves. A brass plaque would recognize the contribution ofthe purchaser. _ 1 Silat Said the bio fas’ de ie “hPa? cided to hold off the donation push until September because summer holidays would be out of the way by then and people by then would also be able to better sec just what it was they were supporting, One highly visible addition will be the canopy which will extend out from the existing entrance. Originally a victim of the cuts, Gilgan said it was put back in be- cause construction factors meant it was not something that could be added on at a later date. That’s because the existing ones slope in toward the building, not a desirable situation, Gilgan added. The price tag for these items covered from the $50,000 con- tingency money set aside in the project budget. Council approved the add-on after architect Alan Soutar indi- caied the project was running slightly under budget and did not se¢ any other large amounts being required from the contingency budget. ° cr , HIGH DENSITY DISKS Generic brand ertified ‘3 ye y per 2 for a limited time only, " 100% *4mb ram *13" tower case #3,5" flappy drive *170 mb hard disk *1 parallel / 2 serial ports / game port Our Price *72.09 per month OAC Sonora 486Sx/25 (can be upgraded to Pentium P24) *512k Video, 16bit IDE hard drive controller 14" .28 Super VGA non-interlaced multisyne monitor *MSDOS 6.22 and Windows Workgroups 3.11 eextended 101-kay keyboard $. emouse & pad #2 year parts and labour warranty Business Software MS-Works for Windows CD version...... 159.99 MS Windows for Workgroups Up... 67,95 CA Simply Accounting (DOS or Win).... 159.99 Quicken (DOS of Win) nscsssssrsessessrscers: 69,99 MS Publisher, om 159.99 LC Mouse Largest Selection of Software in Terrace IBM Gaming Software Tie Fighter Wars... stienerneeeee 24,99 1 Hell Cab CD scsssscnosusnintennanusrnarnernassns 89,99 2 button Serial | x-com.......w:srwerenrenenroeees78.99 Lunicus CD... seseas 65.99 Dark Legion CDesscossernssrarnanenenves jernere BO, 8D 14 And Lots Morel Sonora 486SX/33 (can be upgraded to Pentium P24) *as above with 1mb Local Bus video, Local Bus hard disk controller *255 mb hard drive 57254 per month orth "1495" *** Add $150 to upgrade to a 15” Monitor Watch for “Electronic Futures”, coming sooi: Computer Accessories | Low Prices!
