6 Terrace Review -— Wednesday, January 7, 1987 ~ Kermodes 3rd in Fraser Valle‘ A tough second-game loss ended Caledonia Kermode boys’ 10-game winning streak at the M.E.I. high school basketball tournament on Dec. 20 weekend. However, the Kermodes came back and finished third overall in the three- day eight-team series. Kermodes started with a shakey 71-68 victory over un-ranked Abbotsford Christian. It was 38-38 at . without six-foot, halftime. They went al- most the entire game nine- inch centre Chris McDon- ald, who injured his ankle in the first 10 seconds of the game. Garth Schmidt was high scorer with 16 points. Dave Kirkaldy chipped in with 11, and Dion Orbell had 10. This win put them into the semi-finals a- gainst Parklands of Vic- toria. Parklands, with the tallest lineup of all BC schools, stopped Ker- modes on a_ 67-65 squeaker after our boys came back from a two- point deficit at the half, The possible tying basket just wouldn’t fall through in the dying seconds of the game. Kirkaldy had 14 points as high scorer. Harpel Manhas came up with a dozen, while Pat McPhee added 11. Parklands had started the tournament by beating top-ranked St. Thomas More, and the win over Kermodes put them into the championship game against the host M.E.I. boys. M.E.I. burst Parklands’ drive to the ti- tle by beating the Victoria lads 68-48, Meanwhile, Kermodes took on Bishop Carroll of Calgary in a playoff for third and fifth spots. Kermodes regained -the winning ways by whipping the Albertans 87-69 for third place. Schmidt led the way with 14 points. Manhas and Trevor Shan- - non each scored a dozen. In the surprise awards’ ceremony, only Kirkaldy was mentioned, and that was for a second-team all- star trophy, Coach Phil Letham felt that at least two more players deserved all-star honors. The Surveyors of Terrace Youth Soccer's under-10 division won two and lost one during the playoff portion of their 8-team section.
