6 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 19, 1986 The Terrace teachers’ work-to-rule efforts was not effective against the Caledonia Kermode girls' basketball team, and the same can be said: about the Skeena Boys’ Tsimpseans. The junior basketball team posted a similar record to the Kermodes in their B.C. , Junior Boys’ Invitational series on the March 8 weekend at Vancouver college. The Tsimpseans dropped their opener, then won three in a row for a fifth- place finish, Tsimpseans, who finished runnerup in the northwest zone to Booth Ravens, went to the 12-team series on an in- vitation. Ravens actually won the berth in the three-day tournament. But the Ravens managed only one win and they ended up in 11th place. | Skeena started by los- ing 66-56 to Spencer of Vancouver Island, Skeena just couldn’t get rolling against the number one Island team. Aaron Davis, who played his best ball of the season during this series, was tops in scoring with a dozen points. Harpel Manhas came through with 11, while Dave Hogg chipped in with 10. Skeena came alive. in their second game against Abbotsford and posted a 53-45 win. Despite spraining an ankle in the second half, Manhas ran up 14 points, Davis again led the team in scoring with 15. Game three saw Skeena take on Arbutus of Victoria, and Terrace came out on top 51-41. Manhas, playing on a bad ankle, hooped 22 points in a gritty effort. Davis continued scoring in double figures with 10 points. The win over Arbutus put Skeena against Alberni, the team that eliminated Booth Ravens earlier. The Prince Rupert team had lost 65-51 in their opener to Hugh Boyd of Rich- mond. Then they beat Fort St. John 47-24 before losing 53-47 to Alberni. Tsimpseans supplied the most thrilling game of the series in that Saturday afternoon bat- tle for 5th and 8th posi- tions. They battled Alberni to a 58-58 tie at The Skeena Tsimpsean boy's high school basketball team plonships at Vancouver College. In the first three- minute overtime period, each team scored six points and it was 64-64 going into the second ex- tra session. With 30 seconds left in the extra-extra period, Manhas canned a shot to put Terrace up 70-69. They held off Alberni and Skeena ended up winning by that score. It capped a_ solid season for coach Bob Rafter and his boys, and gave an indication to Kermode boys’ coach Phil Letham that he has some good talent coming to Caledonia High School next year from Skeena.
