The right steps, taken promptly, can save a favorite plant. For instance, if you note that your plant’s lower leaves are turning yellow or that its stems are becoming soft and dark in color, the _plant may be getting too much water. Check to make sure that the drainage hole is not clogged; if the soil has become compacted, repot the plant. Water only when necessary; if in doubt, ask your local nursery expert's advice. Hf your plant’s stems stretch toward the light and are growing very long, it may be receiving too little abl a a light,. Pate-colored, small : leaves on new stems are also & symptom of this same problem. The remedy is to move the plant to a brighter exposure, or closer to 4 win- ‘dow. If you are using artifi- cial light, you may have to increase the wattage or the number of bulbs used. Browning leaf edges, with leaves ultimately dying, in: dicate that a plant is not re- ceiving enough humidity, Mist the plant regutarly, and place its pot ona bed of moist pebbles in a tray. If your plant seems to grow rapidly, but tater wilts and develops a white crust of built-up salts, you're giving It too much fertilizer. Water the plant thoroughly to dis- solve built-up salts, re: watering within half an hour to wash out the salts through .-,.: pot's drainage hole. On the other hand, plants that fade to a pale green, with lower leaves turning’ yellow, may be getting too little fertilizer. Small, new. - ieaves or no growth at all are other indications of this condition. OR eet hee
