Chambers FAMILY OF SIX DESTITUTE admits many go hungry Statements appearing in Vancou- ver daily papers attributed to J. Chambers, social services adminis- trator, to the effect that only two cases of destitution have been re- ported in the city, are challenged by the Unemployment Action As- sociation here. By BERT WHYTE “Vm tired of seeing my family starve in Canada, I'm tired of being penalized by the Canadian. government because I served in the RAF instead of the RCAF. I'm brewned off with the whole pusimess, so I’m shaking the dust of Canada off my feet and tak- ing my wife and four children to Wales, where I know we'll get a better deal.’ Allan Jackson, 24 West Boule- vard, Sea Island, may not find things as rosy im Britain as he expects, but no one can deny, after hearing his story, that he has been handed a rough deal by Canadian authorities. Allan was just a youngster im the Hungry Thirties, when Can- ada’s youth were being herded ‘in 20-cents-a-day “slave camps.” He didn’t fancy the idea of being a gandy-dencer for R. B. Ben- nett, so. he caught a ship at Mon- treal and worked his passage to England. There he found a job, and there he was when war broke out in. 1939. Jackson joined the RAF and fought against fascism for the next six years. He was at El Alamein in 1942, fought in Bur- ma, Malaya and South-East Asia for three years; then served a hitch in Palestine before return- ing te Britain. Allan Jackson was glad to get back to Canada. He settled in Vancouver and brought his. wife “We have hundreds of destitute families coming to our offices and _ appealing for aid,” UAA™ spokes: | men told the Pacific ‘Tribune.’ “There is no aid made for the many hundreds of jobless workers who for one reason or another do not qualify for unemployment insur- ance benefits.” Chambers told.-UAA representa- tives that he had been misquoted in the press, and agreed that there are hundreds of destitute families in the city..Red Cross and Salva- tion Army officials confirmed this, _ stating that their offices have been deluged by appeals for assistance from destitute people. % “IN MEMORIUM” In proud memory of Joe E. Carr, who died in Hamilton, Ont., May 2; 1949, a faithful Refuse jobless vet aid agencies all pass buck and children here from England. Jobs were scarce, but he finally went to work at Canadian White Pine, Five months ago he had to leave his job because a fungus disease contracted in Burma made hospitalization necessary. While in Shaughnessy his wife and children received groceries vuder a provincial aid scheme, but as soon as he was released this assistance stopped. Jackson received) an eviction notice, but a sympathetic citi- zen paid his back rent. City re- lief authorities refused to do anything because he lived on- Sea Island. Army brasshats won't give Jackson a pension. “Why didn’t. you join the RCAF instead of the RAF?” they said. “I thought it was the same war,” Jackson told them. Last Sunday there was no food in the house. David, six months old, had no milk. Freddie, 2, Pat- rick 3, and Diane, 7, were hun- gry. Jackson and his wife Betty, didn’t know where to turn. Some members of the Labor-Progres- sive party heard of his plight and brought out. a hamper of food. That saved the situation tem- porarily, Jackson hopes to re- turn to Britain—when and if he can raise the fare.
