A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 8, 2000 Miller leaves cabinet in major shuffle LAST WEEK’S cabinet shuffle by Premier Ujjal Dosanjh leaves the north without strong elected re- presentation, save for fi- nance minister Pauli Ram- sey from Prince George. Gone is Dan Miller who was the energy, mines and economic development minister. The North Coast MLA was first elected in 1986 but won’t be running again in next year’s provincial election. Miller also served as Premier last year, filling in the period after the re- signation of Glen Clark and before the selection of Ujjal Dosanjh. Ed John, who is from the Fort St. James area but who now lives on the lower mainland, was named to the cabinet as the children and families minister, He has never been elected to the provincial legislature and his ap- pointment breaks with tra- dition in that cabinet mini- sters be taken from the ranks of elected members of the legislature. John most recently was head of the First Nations Summit, a key native group involved in land claims in B.C. He has said he'll return to the north to run as a New Democrat in the ri- ding of Prince George- Omineca in the provincial election of nex year. Skeena NDP MLA Hel- mut Giesbrecht was named parliamentary secretary to agriculture, food and fish- eries minister Ed Conroy, who is from the Kootenays. Giesbrecht was the gov- ernment services minister under Glen Clark but was removed from cabinet by Ujjal Dosanjh after he be- came premier. Gone from cabinet is Andrew Petter who was the attorney-general and Dale Lovick, who was aboriginal affairs minister. David Zirnhelt, an MLA from the Cariboo, who has been on the back bench for the past while and who has been forests minister pre- viously, returns to the ca- binet as aboriginal affairs minister. The new education minister is Joy MacPhail. She’s also the deputy pre- mier. Gordon Wilson is the forests minister and he’s also in charge of negotia- tions to replace the soft- wood lumber agreement with the United States which expires next year. In all seven people left the old cabinet because they aren’t running again in the next provincial election. Most of them, however, have been named as par- liamentary secretaries. That left just local busi- nessman Roger Harris and councillor Rich McDaniel in the running going into last weekend’s nomination meeting. Hull said he doesn’t harbour any grudge against the party for refusing him, and has just renewed his membership. He said he expected the rejection because of his outspoken criticism of lea- der Gordon Campbell's op- position to the Nisga’a treaty. of Northwest Community College.
