B.C. Liberal candidate Rick Wozney’s campaign received contributions from some of the biggest forest companies in the northwest. Victor Helmut Gies- brecht’s campaign raised more money from union sources than any other NDP candidate in the province. Helmut Giesbrecht NDP Powered by huge union contributions, the Helmut Giesbrecht campaign raised $27,442.84 locally. Transfers from the provin- cial NDP and the con- stituency association added another $10,000, bringing the war chest to $37,714.04, The campaign spent $28,574.03 of that — about half the maximum expenses - permitted — leaving $8,516 in the account for future campaigns, Contributors: Leading the list was a $10,500 donation from the Canadian Auto Workers, which represents Alcan’s workers in Kitimat and Kemano. Next was $7,000 from the Kitimat/Terrace and District Labour Council. The Teamsters Joint Council #36 gave $2,000, Smaller amounts included: ' International Brotherhood of Painters ($802.51), Cinaway ~ Kim Rossner ($800), IWA ($590), Surinder Malhotra ($500), B.C. Provincial Council of Carpenters , $900) CUPE - NADC ” ($500), Operating Engineers local 115 ($500), CUPE area office ($500), B.C. Government Employees Union ($375), Elan Travel - George Clark ($350), and CUPE local 2409 ($300), Contributions of $250 or less totalled $2225. Expenses Nearly $6,000 worth of brochures, pamphlets and flyers made up the single largest declared expense of the local NDP campaign. Signs came in at $4,100, and telecommunications also cost $4,100. Media advertising came in at $3,350 — much less than the Liberals spent. Postage was around $3,200 as was salaries and benefits, Rick Wozney, B.C. Transfers from the provin- cial party totalled $10,550, pushing the campign budget to $39,819,16, In all the campaign spent $35,333 — well short of the $57,782.23 election ex- penses permitted. About $6,000 is Iefi in the campaign account. Contributors Business interests, includ- ing the areas biggest forest companies, helped bankroll the campaign. Kitwanga Lumber Yard Ltd. and Buffalo Head Forest Products Lid. (which is owned by Repap) were the two biggest contributors at $5,000 each. (West Fraser and Skeena Ceilulose were the two largest contributors to the provincial Liberal campaign, both giving about $72,000.) Five Star Properties Ltd, — a company owned. by longtime Liberal and Ter- Tace mayor Jack Talsitra — was the third largest con- tributor at $2,500. West Fraser Mills Ltd, donated $2,000. Thomboys Enterprises Inc. of Kitimat contributed $1,695.83, Several companies con- tributed $1,000 each — Progressive Ventures Lid., Skeena Rent-a-car_—_Ltd., ALV. Logging Co. Ltd, and Hobenshield Bros, Log- ging Ltd. Smaller amounts were donated to the local Liberal campaign by: Emporium Builders Supply ($516.88), McTerrace Restaurants Inc. ($500), Skeena Cement Pro- ducts Ltd. ($500), Gerrold J. Martin ($500), East End Holdings Ltd, ($500), Com- mercial Lettering and Signs ($342), and Jose’s Excavat- ing Ltd, ($300). Expenses Almost $13,000 worth of media advertising tops. the list of campaign expenses. . The next largest item was $6,351.45 worth of research and polling. Telecommunications came in at $3,233.50. The campaign spent $2,610.90 on social functions, Just $1,429.80 was spent on signs, Andy Burton Reform B.C. Burton’s Reform campaign collected $21,992 in contributions. A $1,300 to $23,297. The campaign spent just $18,493.31 and reports hav- ing $1,625.32 left over, Contributors Smaller donations — but lots of them — character-. ized the local Reform effort. Terrace Steel Works Ltd, and Lomak Transport Corp. were the two largest Reform supporters at $1,000 each. Other contributors were: Close Up Business Services Ltd.
