Four-areas of concern -bet- ween the Province of British Columbia and the Federal Government were outlined loday by Premier David Barrett at a meeting with B.C, Members of Parliament and representatives of Cabinet. Barrett detailed the Frovince's position on the matier “of oil tankers, ferry subsidies, Federal intrusion into the Provincial jurisdiction of resource taxation, and cost sharing of chronic care ser- vices, The meeting was called to inform the 23 B.C. MP's about the problems, and to discuss the mallers prior ta the convening of Parliament on September 30. Regarding the possibility of oll tankers travelling down B.C.’s. coast to disgorge their cargoes in’ Washington State, Barrett sald “itis a matter of greal concern to lhe citizens of British Columbia thal the transport of of] off aur coast will eventually lead io a major unfortunate accident.’” He said the Federal Govern- ment appears now to be ac- cepling lanker -traffic as A new Handie-Whistle Radia has been designed by the ’ Canadian Motorola Electronics Company for the Logging In- dustry in consultation with a major Canadian forest in- dustries company. Motorola, the’ largest ‘manufacturer of twa way FM -- radios has developed this ~ portable remote control system loimprove communications for ‘safe, fast and efficient logging operations. The Handie-Whistle is ideally suited to “high lead - logging" for remote control of the whistle in yarder logging ~ operations and pravides safe = communication between the ‘ chokerman and yarding » engineer, .. The transmitter is fully solid - state and mounte in a virtually _ indestructable- polycarbonate housing which is shockproof, ‘waterproof and coloured id- stinetively bright red. The omni-directional antenna is. inside the housing for * uthampered operation and the tnsmitler keying switches are sealed and have been life lested withlen million operalians. The transmitter which is compact . and lightweight measures 7 99" x 3.46 x '< 1.65" “and with : . rechargeable nickel cadmium battery welghs less than 20 ounces; it also has a rugged leather carrying case and belt providing convenient right or left hand use. In order to provide the ultimaie degtee of system ‘security Motorola's Handie- Whistle uses a coding scheme consisting of two lones (ran- smitted simultaneously. Molorola’s ‘*Permacode” "filters are used in the encoding circuitry for high selectively and fast, certain response. The plug-in active filler microcir- “cuits. and frequency elements operate wilhou adjustment for dependable operation. A two switch. interlock eliminates the possibility of accidently keying the transmitter. The switch actuators produce a loud “snap giving audio and lactile feedback of the switching ac- lion. The weatherproof Handie- Whistle receiver is .a development from the highly dependable. Ferries, which are a part of the Trans-Canada Highway, receive none. . Regarding Natural Resource Taxation, Barrett said the Federal Government's proposal Radio Designed for less than 84 pounds, A magnetically mounted antenna and mounting rack provides for the receiver's fast, easy In- stallations or removal. The Handie-Whistle (ran- smilter and receiver can both be powered by rechargeable nickel cadmium or disposable mereury batteries. to disallow as a corporate in- come tax deduction the mineral royalties paid the Provincial Governments appears to be an attempt to regulale the level of provinelal royalties, He sald the move couldn't be an attempt lo increase Federal lax revenues because that could have been easily accomplished by closing ‘loop-holes" in federal corporation tax laws 5: that companies could no longe: claim extensive deductions, or by imposing an excess profits lax. ‘ “The proposed action amounts io nothing less than a federal lax onresources - a field which the British North America Act slates comes nol only under the jurisdiction but the cwnership of the pravin- ces," said Barrett. Barrett, called. for a moratorium on the Federal proposals until a joint Federal- Provincial enquiry into natural resource laxatian could be made to determine what kind of taxes thé companies are now paying. He also repeated his offer to surrender provincial ownership Logging For emergency one-way voice capability, additional Handie- Whistle transmitter and. receiver models are availuble with microphone and speaker. — The voice capability of the transmitter is disabled when it is in the normal horizontal position in the carrying case on the belt but an emergency voice: answer pertinent questians. areéa.. briefing.
