A federal judge indefinitely
extended a_ temporary
restraining order Thursday
against the Major League
Umpires Association,

venting baseball's men in
blue from walking out while
their lawyers continue to
deal with the legal rhubarb.

The dispute, which has
been brewing since spring,
was highlighted by a one-day
strike Aug. 25. ° The
disgruntled umpires walked
out after the American and
National leagues refused to
negotiate 21 new demands in
an eight-page telegram sent
Aug. 16 to both league of-
fices.

District Court Judge

Joseph McGlynn ordered
both ‘sides Thursday to
submit briefs by Sept. 15. He
had granted the - temporary
restraining order the same
day the umpires walked out,
but not in time to prevent the
work stoppage.

College and retired profes-
sional umpires filled in at the
13 affected games and the
regulars were back at work
Saturday.

The umpires contend the
current five-year contract
between the association and
the two leagues is not bin-
