ARMED FORCE HREATENS LITTLE CUBA The U.S. was pushing the world dangerously close to the brink of war this week with its actions in Laos and Cuba. In Laos, opinion has: so far stopped the U.S. from direct. intervention. As the Pacific Tribune went to press pressure was growing for reconvening of the Inter- national Truce Supervisory Commission, to seek a peace- ful solution of the Laos crisis. In Cuba, however, the U‘S., this week announced huge military..maneouvres- in- the Caribbean and at the Guant- anamo base in Cuba. In an unprecedented show of naked force the U.S. has sent the following military forces into the coastal waters of Cuba: —A flotilla of 150 naval vessels. —A 45,000 ton super air- craft carrier. —tThree cruisers armed with guided missiles. —Two nuclear submarines. A total of 140,000 US. troops are involved and the military threat is scheduled to |; be kept up until the end of March. In Cuba, meanwhile, people are preparing to repel any invasion forces. The Cas- tro government has_ charged |: that the U.S. and its stooges are planning imminent invas- ion. Cuba labor unions have called on workers’ every- where to demand hands off their Island. republic. Adding weight to Cuban charges of plans for invasion are reports circulating in the U.S. Recently Dr. Ronald Hinton of Stanford University said, ‘there is now a wide- spread belief that the Central Intelligence Agency is spon- soring an invasion «of Cuba from. Guatemala. He added: “Reliable observers in Gua- temala say that without doubt there is in Retalhulau (Guate- mala) -a. large and well forti- fied. base where Cuban ex- iles are being trained to in- vade Castro’s fortress.” After pointing out that it. is “generally believed” - the source. of funds is the U.S. government operating through Allan Dulles’ C.I.A.,; Dr. Hin- ton says. the . Cuban -govern- ment is aware of this base. According to him the Cuban government “believes the plan is to seize the Isle of Pines and set’ up aU. S. -sponsored government,” | Dr. James Endicott, Canad: ian Peace Congress chairman, only world-public ‘now visiting Cuba, wired Prime . Minister Diefenbaker that Canada urge the USS. the |: government to keep hands off Cuba. Text. of the Endicott wire says: ‘Urgently request you | urge upon U.S. government | “Hands Off Cuba” policy. | There is a clear. and present danger of U.S. armed inter- vention in Cuba. World peace hangs in the balance.” Meanwhile, in it was announced that the U.S. embassy at Burrard and Georgia Sts., will be picket- Vancouver |} play for Cuba Youth Com- mittee on Saturday. Picketers are gathering at the Pender Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. and will march to the U.S. em- bassy with placards. Last week the Communist Party of Canada in a strong appeal urged “all peace-lov- ing Canadians to voice their opposition to imperialist in- | trigues in Laos and: Cuba, to make their voices known to the government by wires, res- olutions and letters.” (Full text of the Commun- ist Party statement is on page ted by supporters of the Fair- 3.)
