By ALEX HAMILTON TERRACE’S NEEDLE ex- change program should be taken over by an organiza- tion that will better serve lo- cal heroin addicts, says pub- lic health nurse Alice Christensen. “We're not seeing a frac- tion of the peaple who are injecting,” said Christensen, who presently runs the ex- change. The exchange, which op- erates Wednesday afternoons from the Skeena Health Unit, — supplies needles to 10 customers, five of whom are regulars. Christensen said a lot more addicts would come in for needles if the exchange wasn't in the health unit — a professionally run govern- ment building. We fecl it is really needed, but we want to make sure the community is served in the best way possible. And that’s not being done here.” Terrace’s needle exchange offers a one-to-one ex- change — one clean needle for one dirty needle. It also offers clients con- doms, Hepatitis A and B vaccinalions and informa- tion about drug abuse. Some addicts are injecting up to 15 times a day, she siad, but the exchange limits how many needles it will give out at once. Presently in Terrace, the needle exchange is the only place where addicts can go for clean needles. Terrace docsn’t have a methadone clinic where ad- dicts can get treated for their addiction.
