A - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 25, 1998 One family’s scary night Driver shouldn't have left An open letter to: Ao unknown driver Dear Slr; You don’t know me and J don’t know you, but let me introduce myself, I am a mom of a sixteen year old boy. Not just any boy, but the one you hit with your car on Tuesday night, Feb. 17, It was approximately 9:15 p.m. and it was of course dark. My son had been to the show and was walking home. He walked most of the way with a friend, dropped him off at his home on Pear St. and continued his two-block trek home. He crossed Graham St. and was walking on the side of the road as there is no sidewalk there. It is a very poofly lit area and like most teens, he was wearing dark clothes. He heard you coming and glanced over his shoulder. He knew he was going to be hit and tied to jump out of ithe way. Unable to do so, your vehicle struck him and threw him upon your hood. His head hit your windshield, You immediately stopped and asked him if be was okay. He answered a quick ‘I’m fine’, and you proceeded along your way, Let me tell you the rest of the story. He continued his walk home feeling very shaken and confused, About four houses from our home he began ta feel very unsteady and had to crawl the rest of the way, My husband and I were not home at that time so he sent his brother to get my neighbour, Thank goodness she was home and was able to call us from our lap swim to meet her and our son at the hospital. When we arrived we found him in a neck brace and trembling. He was very Open a Bay, please An open letter to: Mayor and Council Heilo: \ The recent purchase of K- Mart by the Hudson’s Bay Company gives our com- munity a golden opportunity to encourage a betier quality. retailer to set up shop in Terrace. Calied the Centre for Leadership and Technology, it’s connected to the Kitimat Skills Centre, a facility opened earlier this decade to provide industrial training for employees of large in- dustry in that city, Alcan, Eurocan and Methanex support the centre and now want their employ- ces who live here to have the same kind of op- portunity as the ones who live in Kitimat. Employees in Kitimat have. access to an engincer- fag technology program at the Southern Alberta In- stitute of Technology. The skills centre in Kitimat of fers the course in a unique internet-based distance learning cnvironment. The same is planned for the new Terrace centre. Bleeding from cuts to his forchead and above his eyes he began to cry. The doctor was very concerned. At the very least he had a bad concussion and was in shock. Blood was drawn and x-rays were ordered, My husband and [ waited and prayed that everything would be alright. At midnight we were told that nothing was broken, but they would like to keep him overnight for observa- tion. He was given an I.V. and taken to a room. I spent a very long night with him as he was awakened every hour by the nurses to take vitals and check his pupils. The next day he was reledsed and told to take it easy for the next couple of days. He is very sore and has a headache off and on but other than that he will be okay. I hope he has leamed a lesson from this experience and will be more careful to walk further off the road. doubt I will be able to make him give up his dark clothes, What I am hoping for is that you and many others will learn a Jesson from the terrible night rn - Chrysier and its dealers are proud to sponsor our Canadian Olympic athletes. My son remembers very little about you or your vehicle, which after such a blow to the head is understandable. I realize he told you he was fine, but obviously he was not. What should have been done was this. If you didn’t want to move him, go to the nearest house and call either the police or the victim’s home. In many cases, a ride home would be in order.
