Third theatre telethon to be held on March 1 Another $200,000 needsd before work on building can start TERRACE LITTLE Theatre is a third of its way towards its goal of building a new community arts centre. And it hopes io be even further by the end of the day on March 1, the date of the third = annual Applause telethon, Gordon Oates, one of the -key. organizers of the telethon, estimates it will cost about $1.5 million to build the new theatre. An- other $150,000 or $200,000 will allow the group to ac- tually start work on the building. The new’ theatre will be built on the banks of the Skeena River, next to the former River Industries building. Pienty of gravel is still needed to bring the height of the land up past the high flood mark. Ii will replace the aging McColl Playhouse and will seat about 250 people, In order to work towards its goal the theatre group started holding telethons three years ago. This year’s, called Applause ‘98, will be held March 1 at the REM Lee Theatre, The previous two telethons have been very successful, said Oates, Last year's raised about $50,000 in donations and in-kind goods and services. Headline acts this year in- clude UHF, Leora Cash and Major Comad Flapps. All have performed in Terrace before and been well received by audiences. The acoustic trio UHF is so named for its three mem- bers, Shari Ulrich, Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes. The trio create an intimate feel on slage, explaining the history behind some of the songs and bringing the audience into the experi- ence. You’re left feeling as though UHF is in your living room, rather than per- forming for hundreds. Watching the telethon live in the REM Lee Theatre will also give the audience an even better chance to get closer to the performers, points out Oates, since a telethon eucourages the bands to mingle with the crowds. Cashe is no stranger to theatre either and her theatre credits include Black and Gold II and Santa's Got Soul, two clectrifying pro- ductions a The Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver. But the telethon isn’t just for adults. Stuart Nemtin will be back as Major Con- rad Flapps, io provide enter- tainment for the kids.
