Demand end of McCarran Act in U.S. An appeal for concerted public effort to demand that all prose- cutions and actions under the McCarran Act be. ended at once was made last week by Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, chairman of the: Hall-Davis Defense Committee, following on the decision of the U.S, Supreme Court on June 8, In a special statement issued by the Committee it “welcomes the decision , , , aS a real open- ing to victory against the Mc- Carran Act,” The statement is- sued from New York said, “The decision upholds the Fifth Amendment rights not only of Communist but of any and all Americans against self-convic- tion under the verdict of guilt that is built into this law.” Pointing out that the order to the Communist Party to register and its. conviction for refusing to do so are nullified by this de- cision, the statement says: “Logically the indictments of Gus Hall and Benjamin J, Davis should be immediately dismissed, The ‘membership’ citation of 37 in- dividuals across the nation, and the Subversive Activities Control Board’s; orders for them to register, should also be legally affected by this decision,” The Committee said that all proceedings against so-called “front” organizations shouldalso be dismissed with, and that the Committee would continue its defense of all outstanding cases until the McCarran Act is ended _ once and for all, The Supreme Court decision was the first substantial break- ‘through against the registration requirements of this odious, fascist-like edict passed 14 years ago, Granville Island ( B.C. UNIONS Cont'd from pg. 2 the I.W.A, The united and mili- tant policies of the Carpenters defeated the contractor’s attempt to foist a low settlement, There is every indication that the wood- workers this year, too, were ready for militant leadership which never came from the top officials, Had it been forthcom- ing, the woodworkers could have won considerably more,~ Forty-eight agreements have been signed to date with an aver- age increase of 11 cents per hour, Most agreements extend over two or three years, Someunions such as Mine - Mill, Seamen, Electrical Workers and others are still to be heard from before the picture is complete, How- - ever, one thing stands out in the 1964 negotiations, Allthe efforts of big. business, government and the right wing of the unions have not succeeded in tying the work- ers to long term contracts with small increases, Inthe main, the workers have blocked their plans and kept the door open for a major . struggle on the big issues still facing the labor movement at the end of the present contracts, TED HARRIS 757 East Hastings St. Vancouver 4, B.C. . ‘Painters’ and Paperhangers’ Supplies : Sunworthy Wallpaper Reg. 45c — Now 19c a Roll. iis ' | | \ ' ' HPO CCOCOSE CEOS EOSOHS OO OOESOOOE ‘Everything in Flowers’ _FROM EARL SYKES — wecec ccc cece cece ee eeeeSOSeSeSese ele eseOeSEoeee? 42 E.
