AND WE STILL NEED 277 SUBS PEACE COUNCIL CALLS FOR: World week of solidarity with people of Vietnam The World Council of Peace has called for an “International Week of Solidarity With the Peo- ple of Vietnam” beginning Dec, 20, the fifth anniversary of the founding of the National Liber- ation Front of South Vietnam, The action was announced here by Dr, James G, Endicott, chair- man of the Canadian Peace Con- gress, who has just returned from a meeting of the executive and presiding committee of the World Council, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, November 19-21, There was general agreement at the Sofia meeting that the aim of the U,S, war of aggression against the people of Vietnam is to divide Vietnam at the 17th parallel, occupying the south half under a U,S, controlled and fin- anced puppet government and building huge military bases there, What the U.S, government is in fact demanding is the uncon- ditional surrender ofthe National Liberation Front by means of in- tense military pressure and behind the smoke-screen of “un- conditional discussions” which would not include the National Liberation Front, There was also general agree- ment at Sofia that the U,S. gov- ernment has repeatedly refused meaningful negotiations and as in the case of the U-2 incident and the Bay of Pigs fiasco of 1962, the U.S. government is being caught in falsehoods, A similar position was outlined by the representatives of Hanoi and the National Front at the meeting in Sofia, They willnever surrender to U,S, military pres- sure, They are prepared to dis- cuss a political settlement at any time on the following basis: 1,/.-The: U.s, government should solemnly declare its ad- herence to the Geneva Agree- ments of 1954 and that it re- spects the right of the Vietna- mese people to independence, sovereignty, unity and terri- torial integrity, 2. To demonstrate its sin- cerity the U.S, government would stop its war of destruction against the Democratic Republic of Viet- nam, which is a sovereign and independent government, 3. The U.S. government should recognize that the Na- tional Liberation Front is the only authentic representative of the people of South Vietnam and should cease to send troops to Vietnam and proclaim its will- ingness to withdraw all military forces and bases, Commenting on the visit of U.S, defence secretary Robert Mc- Namara to Saigon, Dr, Endicott said that it will likely be followed by a large scale escalation ofthe war, This will not break the will of the Vietnamese people, but it may hasten the day when the socialist bloc will start rather massSive aid to Vietnam. The presidential committee of the World Council of Peace has awarded a Frederic Joliot-Curie gold peace medal to Dr. James Endicott, chairman of the Canadian Peace Congress. Other recipients include Martin Nie- moller, Linus Pauling and Valentina Tereshkova. Chinese stand hurts anti-imperialist front The Communist Party, in a statement issued by its national executive on Nov, 26, said it “deplores” the. position taken by the Chinese publications Hongqi and Renmin. Ribao in a recent editorial entitled “The CPSU new leadership’s harangue on ‘unity of action’ rebuffed.” “This editorial rejected the need for united action of all Communist and Workers Parties against the common enemy — imperialism in general and U.S, imperialism in particular and in- stead undertook a bitter attack on the Communist Party of the Soviet Union,” said the Canadian state- ment, “Such a position can only wea- ken the anti-imperialist front at a time when it needs decisive strengthening to ensure all-out solidarity in support of the heroic peoples of Vietnam and all peo- ples striving for national liber- ation and the curbing of U,S, aggression, “Our party is firmly convinced that what unites all Communist and Workers Parties is greater than what divides them at the present time, This should be the starting point for united action against imperialism by all par- ties, *It is our hope that the Com- munist Party of China will recon- sider the position taken by the above publications and together with all parties strengthen the common front against imper- ialism and for peace and social progress,” December 10, 1965—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 11
