GRANDVIEW press club, holder of the

Pacific Tribune city shield on six occa-
sions in the past 10 years, is in front again
in the current financial campaign, with
$325 turned in on a target of $550. A
Grandview club member, Frank Politano,
was also the first Honor Press Builder this
year.

Leading the Honor Press Builder parade
now is Bill Hrehrechuk (Advance) who has
collected $152 and is just getting into his
stride. Every year Bill sets a new record.
Other top money-raisers include Frank
Politano, $112; M. J. Elder (Prince Rupert)
Rita Whyte (Broadway) $81; Bert Whyte
(Broadway) $57; John deWever (Grand-
view) $50; Alfred Campbell, $50 and
Charlie Caron (North Vancouver City) $45.

Take a look at the pledge form on the
left. At present 120 supporters have pledg-
ed to raise $25 or more for the drive. We

want at least 300 Press Builders. How
about it, readers?
Subs are important, too, We urge sup-

porters to try and sign up new readers, as
well as attending to every renewal promptly.

Scots poet
rejoins
Communists

LONDON

Hugh MacDiarmid, the inter-
nationally known Scottish poet
has rejoined the British Com-
munist party from which he
was expelled in 1938.

In a statement published in
the London Daily Worker last
week, he said: “Fair weather
friends are a liability rather
than an asset at such a conjunc-
ture as confronts us just now.”

Expelled for what he terms
a “peripheral issue,” McDiar-
mid continued to work for
Scottish Soviet friendship, the
British Peace Committee and
many other progressive causes.

Castigating those’ who de-
mand perfection of Russia,
China and the other socialist
states, the poet hailed their
achievements in the past 40
years.

“I have had the privilege of

travelling in the past few years,

in the Soviet Union, in Poland
and in Czechoslovakia. Every-
thing I have seen in these
countries and all my inter-
course with their public men,
their writers and other artists
and their ordinary folk, has
abundantly sterngthened and
confirmed my Communist
faith.” -

His statement called for a
greater measure of fundamen-
tal discussions between frater-
nal Communist parties and less
“rubber-stamp policies devised
elsewhere.”

But he went on to say: “This
in no way conflicts with the
need for Communists every-
where to give priority for the
support at all costs of the
USSR, People’s China and the
other People’s Democracies.”

“No fault or failing should
deflect any sincere Communist
from the core of Marxist
faith.”

Find in Japan
upsets theories

PEKING
Thirteen bronze mirrors pro-
duced in China 1,800 to 1,900
years ago and unearthed in
Honshu, Japan, last December,
may help refute some long-
held views about the ancient
history of Japan in the opinion
of Yoshimasa Kamaki, of the
Kurashiki Bureau of Archae-
ology.
These round bronze mirrors

are seven to eight inches in’

diameter, with inscriptions of

deities and animals. Two of -

them are Similar in shape, the
remainder differing from each
other in size and decorative de-
signs,

The discovery was made in

a tomb inside a mountain cave -

in Okayama, Honshu, by Akira
Fupita and two other Japanese
archeaologists. Ancient swords,
arrows.and spades were also
found in the cave.
