WHE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C 0 Ly N\ . , ‘ff i : , ; i aero JUL 114 1977 TO: Mayor and Council July 8th, 1977 FROM: Public Works Committee . Report from the Public Works Committee Meeting held June oth, 1977 at 4:15 p.m. IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman E.W. Mabbett Alderman M.A. Thompson G.W. Ulmer, Works & Utilities Superintendent E. Heffner, Sanitation Foreman V.G. Borch, P. Eng., City Engineer ITEM TI Re: Garbage Pickup - Statutory Holidays Reference is made to the following resolution which was passed at the regular Council Meeting of January 17th, 1977: , "That the policy for garbage collection covering statutory holidays calling for gradual catch-up on the several days following the holiday as set forth in a report from the Public Works Committee January llth, 1977 be implemented on a trial basis for a maximum period of four months during which time a record of complaints received would be maintained with a full report submitted to Council at the expiration of the trial period". The trial period has now been completed and we have had the Opportunity to observe the effect of the trial policy. Con- siderable difficulties (and of course the resulting complaints) were experienced the first time this was tried but with some adjustments and with better luck with regard to equipment breakdowns, the second trial worked much better. Nevertheless : it is apparent that in order to be sure of a minimum of complaints and in order to avoid overtime in order to be caught up by the end of the week we are now at the point that we have to depend on no equipment breakdowns. This-is not realistic. Therefore, the Committee recommends that until such time as it is necessary to purchase an additional garbage packer the old policy of providing garbage collection on statutory holidays (with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years Day) be maintained.
