December 8th, 1975 Letters were received from YSM Contracting Ltd., and Watson's Excavating, December 3rd, 1975, requesting burning permits for clearing land at a 24 lot subdivision North of the 1200 block Prairie and Regina, and at 2986 Coast Meridian Road respectively - the latter property being that owned by Westgate Enterprises Ltd. Moved by Alderman Traboulay: Seconded by Alderman Ranger: That the requests of YSM Contracting Ltd., and Watson's Excavating, for burning permits to clear land at a 24-lot subdivision North of the 1200 block Prairie and Regina, and at 2986 Coast Meridian Road, respectively, be denied. Defeated. Aldermen Mabbett, Ranger, and Traboulay voted in favour of the resolution. Prior to defeat of the foregoing resolution, a discussion ensued and Alderman Ranger stated his view that the past practice of clearing land by burning is not acceptable today and that the recent By-law amendment banning such burning is a progressive step; however, Alderman Thompson pointed out that in both instances clearing was underway prior to passage of the By-law and that the precedent set in granting permission to the Greater Vancouver Housing Corporation to complete clearing of its project on Coast Meridian Road by burning should be continued in the case of the two applications now under consideration. Mayor Campbell commented that prohibiting burning in clearing land would increase the cost of housing, and he suggested that as an alternative the time of burning during a year should be controlled. a Moved by Alderman Thompson: Seconded by Alderman Keryluk: That the request of Watson's Excavating in a letter dated December 3rd, 1975, for a burning permit tu clear land at 2986 Coast Meridian Road, be approved.
