ONE TERRACE company is getting some business out of
the cancellation by the Alaska Marine Highway system of
its Prince Rupert ferry run.

Food for Homestake’s Snip gold mine in the Iskut Valley
is normally bundled together here, trucked to Prince
Rupert, put on the Alaskan ferry and shipped to Wrangell,
Alaska for delivery by air to the mine,

But when the Alaskan ferry was blockaded by angry
fishermen two weekends ago, Hawkair Aviation Services
gota phone call.

The food was taken off the ferry, trucked back to Terrace
and flown directly to the mine the same day.

Hawkair’s Dave Menzies says the company will be fly-
ing more food shipments to the mine for at least the sum-
mer.

Hawkair already bas a contract with the mine to fly in
fuel and other supplies and lo take out concentrate.

B.C. Auto grows

B.C. AUTOMOTIVE bought out UAP/NAPA Auto
Parts, formerly known as Auto Marine Electric, last week.

B.C. Automotive is owned by Jan anc George Munson,
Tan Munson says they plan to move the UAP/NAPA store
from its present location on south Kalum into the recently
renovated B.C, Automotive store on August 1.

‘We're expanding to help serve the community belter,”’
said Munson. The newly moved store will offer a wider
variety of product lines and more inventory.

Although the UAP store is being relocated, Munson said
he’s not planning on selling the building or property. He
didn’t say what is planned for the property.

Three current employees from the UAP/NAPA store will
move with the store, while two others will be laid off, said
Munson. That’s because with ihe amalgamation of the two
stores, less staff is needed.-

Bul Munson says those employees might be hired back
in the future, as there are further expansions planned at the
B.C, Automotive store,

The Terrace purchase was done in conjunction with the
purchase of Kitimat Auto Parts, also a UAP/NAPA out-
lei. That store will be renamed B.C. Automotive.

- Forwest adds shift

HALF OF a crew for a second shift has already been hired
at Forwest Veneer Inc. in Terrace,

The mill, located on Hwy. 16, is newly renovated. It’s
the first mill of its kind in B.C. and one that takes value-
added to new heights in the northwest. Production started
in May, with a shift of about 25 people,

Company president Mike Thorpe says the mill will
employ about 45 people by the end of August.

Because of the addition of a second shift, full production
capacity probably won't be reached until November, he
said. That’s because of training time. Forest Renewal B.C.
is supporting that training, in part, he added,

The veneer mill shouldn’t be vulnerable to Jocal Quctua-
tions in wood availability, therefore hopefully providing
steady employment, Spruce, hemlock and douglas fir logs
will come to the mill from all comers of the province.

Environmental Health Issues: Mad Cow Disease

We'va had a number of
worried inquiries aboul Mad
Cow Disease, also called BSE,
and | hope this articte will ease
unsubstantiated fears.

First of all, no it's got nothing to
do with crazed cows doing
summer-saults down the main
street. BSE is a chronic degen-
erative disease affecting the
central nervous system of cat
tle. It is primarily isalated to
Britain and a few European
countries and is thought to be
caused by a “slow virus” or “pri-
on". The contraversy and
resultant fears arose when
some scientists postulated that
a new form of Grautzfeldt-
Jakab disease (CJD) , a simi-
larly degenerative disease in
humans, may be caused by the

consumption of BSE infected .

control measures In place to
ensure BSE infected cattle,
beef, or beef by-products do
not enter Canada.
(BSE cannot infect the milk and
cheese imported from the UK,

(As of a raport issued yester-
day, control measures in Britain
have reduced the BSE found in
their cattle by more than 70%.

(There has been no apparent
increase in the normal rates of
CJD in BC

So the good news Is that
those who say you shouldn't
eat beef because of the chance
af contracting CJD are giving
you a bum steer,
