That's Norman Hudson putting bundled seedlings into a box before being placed in cold storage. TERRACE — Workers at the Thornhill nursery have started putting seedlings into cold storage for the winter. Approximately: seven million secdlings will slumber at just above freezing until taken out next spring and summer for replanting. Four million of those seedlings are two years old and three mil- lion are one year old, says nurs- ery manager Glenn Goodwill. Spruce makes up half of the crop, balsam 20 per cent with hemlock, cedar and pine at 10 per centeach, ‘“We grow whatever our clients want The percentages change cach year,”’ said Goodwill. The seedlings are lifted from their styrofoam growing con- tainers, wrapped in bundles of 18 and placed in cardboard boxes prior to being put in cold storage. It takes a production line of people to do that and they'll be kept busy as the year draws to a close. One of the important aspects of the job is separating seedlings that don’t match specifications set down by the forest service. All of the two year old see- diings have been grown outside while the one-year crop has been grown in greenhouses. This year’s cold storage effort is the second to the last following the announcement the nursery will be closed. “*There*ll be one more lifting next fall and it’ll be all hands on deck, They’ll be put into storage for the spring of 1994,”’ said Goodwill. kk kkk TERRACE — New to the Shames Mountain Ski Corpora- tion — and this area — is Louise Pos. The decision to have a nursery in Thornhill was to provide a closer source of seedlings for the northwest, says forest service sil- viculture official Drew Brazier, It was the second nursery the forest service started in the north- west. A smaller, bareroot nursery has been producing seedlings in Telkwa for years. The Thornhill nursery was one of 11 operated by the provincial government until 1988 when eight were sold off as part of the Socred government’s overall privatization plan. It and five others were bought by Pacific Regeneration Tech- nologies, a company started by former forest service employees. Back then the demand for see- diings rose dramatically, from 200 million a year to a high of 300 million to meet a long stand- ing backlog of clearcuis not replanted. But that’s changed as backlog replanting has canght up and the companies are now responsible to replant what they cut. This year was the final year of a five-year contract taken out by the province to meet that initial backlog seedling demand. Brazier said he didn’t know if the province would have closed the nursery given the decreased demand for seedlings, “The only reason for closing would be no longer having a need for the production,”’ he said.
