Conquer cancer campaign gears up TERRACE — April is Cancer Month: The Ter- race Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society will be conducting a door to door campaign from April 1 to 17. Guide book on B.C. parks out A new guide book is now available ‘providing detailed information on British Columbia’s pro- vincial, national, and selected municipal and regional parks. The BC Parks Explorer was published by White- cap Books of North Van- couver with encourage- ment and assistance from the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division of the Ministry of Environment and Parks. The author, Maggie Paquet, is a former Park Interpreter at Goldstream Provincial Park near Victoria. The 400-page paper- back is illustrated with black and white photos and maps. Copies of the book, which is moderately pric- ed, are available at most bookstores itt the pro- vince, The money raised through these donations will be used to support the ongoing programs of Can- cer Research, Education and Patient Services. by Cathy McKinney Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer, Terrace Unit Because of research into the. causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this -disease, more cancers are being cured or controlled with each pass- ing year. On Saturday, March 28 the Tetrace Unit .of the Cancer Society will be holding a Daffodil Day at the Skeena Mall. Informa: tion pamphlets will be available and also Smart Cooking cookbooks will be on sale. This year the Terrace Unit sponsored three events: Bake Sale, Cold Turkey Day, Daffodil Day, and also three workshops were held in the community. The local unit is once again sponsoring the April Conquer Cancer Cam- paign. We appreciate the assistance of many volun- teers as area captains and canvassers for the April Campaign. Without their help our goal of $9,000.00 again this year would not be possible. Please give them your support when they call on you during the April cam- paign. The short play was a part of the Ter- race Little Theatre's “Couch Potato” production. vocalist of year visits | TERRACE — Gary Fjell- gaard, named country male vocalist of the year for 1985, was in Terrace _ last week visiting his sixth grand child born to his daughter Karin Howard from Thornhill. by Daniele Berquist ‘ Born in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan Fiellgaard began his singing career in the town’s church choir. At the age of 15, he and his family moved west to Prince George where he worked for 18 years logg- ing and playing his music in the evenings. . “IT developed a back problem’’, he explained. By 1973, Fjellgaard pur- sued his musical interest on a full time basis. Since then he’s played his share of coffee houses and bars with bands of his own. However, his success has grown most rapidly in the last five years while he’s been working primarily as asolo performer, focusing on the concert stage. His most recent stage appearance was the open- ‘ing act for a Tanya Tucker tour in a number of major centres in Canada, It’s a little frightening walking into a 10,000 seat arena with just a guitar’, said Fjellgaard. ‘‘I wondered if people would be able to hear me alone. with my guitar, Then, they turn on the PA system and there’s 1200 watts of power, _Fjellgaard said all he had to do was breathe on his guitar and the arena was full of music, Fjellgaard has won many awards in his short career. However, he ~ claims that the one who pleases him the most is the honor bestowed upon him by the readers of Country Music News, published in Ottawa, in the year 1985, The miagazine’s readers selected him as- Canada’s Country Male Vocalist of . the Year. ‘‘It was a real honor,” said the country artist. Fjellgaard’s “\iltimate goal is to write a hit song, hopefully about some © place in Canada. ‘I want to write a song that will last forever’, he said. Currently the Mercey | Brothers who visited Ter- race last year have the number one song in Ca- nada titled Heroes, a _ Fjellgaard composition. He added; ‘‘Maybe that’s the song that will be the song I’ve been looking for’’. Fjellgaard now makes his home on Gabriola - Island. My wife Lynn and I make frequent trips to Prince George and Ter- race since that’s where ‘ most of our family lives. Watch for Fjellgaard’s first LP release in over three years, ‘‘No Time To Loose’’.
