Skeena golfer get new home: iW 1H PRO SHOP { > SS - After 34 years of con- tinuous service, members and other volunteers are replacing the clubhouse facilities at Terrace’s Skeena Valley Golf and Country Club. Numerous additions and renovations have been made to the struc- ture since it was of- ficially opened on June 6, 1952. Early this year, the membership decided the building had come to a stage whereby more changes and ‘repairs were no longer feasible. With major improve- ments already in action on the course itself, it was deemed necessary to tear down the old build- ing and erect something that could handle the in- creasing influx of golf- ers. gk MEETING ROOM in the amount of $66,303.00 was an- nounced in July. In issuing the grant, government minister Grace McCarthy pointed out the $66,000 repre- sented one-third of the - estimated costs, eX- cluding materials on hand. Donated labour was calculated at $6 per hour for grant purposes. / The Club had to sub- mit detailed cost esti- mates to Victoria, and provide evidence the organization has man- aged to raise a substan- tial amount of the rest of funds required. The remainder of the cost is coming from a mortgage addition of $50,000, plus volunteer labour, the sale of club share certificates at $250 each, and a ‘‘buy-a- brick’? scheme at $5 a brick. Wilcox or Danny Rosen- gren. These entitle the holder to a 20 percent discount on annual fees for the next three years, and full voting privileges in club operations. The ‘‘brick’’ scheme, which had drawn strong interest from members and green-fee-ers alike, allows you to signa brick on the board in the cur- rent building. Each brick is then permanently finished and will be in- stalled in the new building. Construction ' co- ordinator Dick Graff says the building has the most functional design for the money. ‘‘There is literally no wasted space and we are able to use a lot of items we have on hand,’’ Graff says. Graff went on to ex- a plain they’ve included in- put from the architects Starting last February, the executive stressed to members that the ancient building had to be re-7 placed. Continuing | problems with water, : sewage, lighting and heating added up to the fact it was slowly falling apart, and sinking more funds into repairs was like flogging a dead horse. Immediate steps were taken to seek finances to construct facilities in the neighborhood of one quarter of a_ million dollars. Insufficient funds in the club’s cof- fers meant they had to seek out a government grant for the major por- tion of the expense.
