Tough going for Britain
at Brussels ECM meet
France and West Germany
have proposed terms on
British entry into the Euro-
pean Common Market that
would shatter present Com-
monwealth trade relations.
These terms were revealed
at the Brussels meeting of
ECM ministers, called to dis-
cuss. Britain’s request for
membership.
Britain had originally pro-
posed gradual elimination of
Commonwealth pre ferences
on industrial commodities.
The French, however, with
West German support, sug-
gested that the British pro-
posal for the gradual fading
of preferences was too slow.
The British fared even
worse as far as agricultural
preferences were concerned.
Britain’s plan for the import
of agricultural commodities
from Canada, New Zealand
and Australia, designed to
provide comparable outlets in
Europe with those previously
enjoyed by these countries in
Britain, was described as ex-
treme and unbalanced, even
by those smaller countries
which are more favorably
disposed toward British en-
try into ECM.
MAKE SURE YOUR NAME
GOES ON VOTERS’ LIST
Now is the time to make
sure that your name is on the
voters’ list.
You can check the lists
which have been posted on
polls in each subdivision. Be-
sides that if you have been
enumerated you should re-
ceive a copy of the voters’
list for your poll in the mail,
not later than May 28.
If you are entitled to vote,
but your name has been left

off, it may be put on at the
court of revision which sits
on May 31, June 1 and 2.
If you are not sure how to
go about getting your name
on the list, you can contact
the returning officer or one
of the election headquarters.
Nelson Clarke, the national
campaign manager of the
Communist Party points out
that the election. headquar-
ters and offices of the Com-
munist Party will be very
pleased to assist voters in
this respect.
Clarke stresses that in ur-
ban ridings, it is essential for
the voter to have his name in-
cluded on the list by the
Court of Revision. Otherwise,
he cannot vote. In rural con-
stituencies, it is still possible
for the voter to swear in at
the poll on election day, pro-
viding he is vouched for by
a person whose name is on
the list.

Common Market countries
such as France and _ Italy,
however, want no competi-
tion from Canada, New Zea-
land and other Common-
wealth countries, which could
threaten their own agricul-
tural products.
Meanwhile, in New Zea-
land, U.S. State Secretary
Dean Rusk once again mo-
destly prodded Britain to-
ward ECM membership. Full
participation by Britain in
moves toward European uni-
ty, he said, “will benefit all
of us.”
Behind Rusk’s gentle words
was the oft-stated U.S. eager-
ness to hammer together a
powerful economic and mili-
‘tary alliance in Europe as a
bulwark against Communism.
Rusk’s statement once again
served to underline the poli-
tical character of ECM.
Apology
Last week the Pacific
Tribune, in its story of
the banquet which wound up
the financial drive, correctly
reported the outstanding
achievement of the Hastings
East club in winning the
shield as the best drive club
in the city.
Unfortunately, by error,
the cutline under the picture
showing the PT editor with
the shield winners, named
another club instead of the
Hastings East Club.
The PT expresses its deep
regret at the error, We are
publishing this correction so
that no credit will be taken
away from the tremendous
job done by the Hastings East
club in raising $869.15 on a
quota of $600.
Almost half the total pop-
ulation of the world lives in
four countries—China, India,
the USSR and the USA.
