Aorangi crew walks off

Eaton's loses

union drive

TORONTO
The T. Eaton ©o., probably the
largest single employer of labor in
Toronto (a staff of 16,000), has lost
its attempt to prevent unionization
of its stores and warehouses. An
Ontario Labor Relations Board de-
cision has rejected the argument of
the company that all its employees
should be included in a collective
bargaining unit.
The board’s decision arose out of
an application by Local 1,000, De-
partment Store Employees’ Union
(CIO-CCL), for certification at
Eaton’s. The union, for purposes
of a fair bargaining unit, put the
staff figure at 13,500 and made ap-
plication for a bargaining unit of
11,500.
While the board rejected the ar-
gument of the Eaton company it
also included in the unit certain
office clerical workers and occas-
sional workers which the union
wanted excluded. '

The board must now determine
by a study of the company’s em-
ployment lists how many workers
there are in the unit the board has
drawn up. The union must then
show that it has a membership of
45 percent of those in the bargain-
ing unit in order to obtain a certi-
fication vote.

Officers of the Department Store
Employees Union are positive of a
majority and want a certification
vote taken as quickly as possible.

If such a vote is won it will
mean that one of the most open-
shop anti-labor department store
corporations will have lost a bat-
tle of many years standing to
prevent its employees being or-
ganized into a union of their own
choice. While the campaign of
the present union is just over
two years old, the actual fight
against unionization is an old one
at Eaton’s.

Organization now will be a sig-
nal for a drive against other open
shop employers, including the big
Simpson’s department store and the
Woolworth corporation. The cur-
rent union campaign is one which
received the active assistance of all
Toronto CCL-CIO unions, plus
many outside the city. Assistance
came in the way of funds, assist-
ance in organization and union de-
monstrations before company build-

Senator Edwin C. Johnson (Dem., Colorada) has taken his case to the American
people with a radio appeal for public support of his proposal for ending the war in

Korea on June 25.

national-wide broadcast, called on church groups, trade unions,

ganizations to demand prompt action on his resolution.

Indicative of growing support for

Johnson’s resolution were these
developments:
@ The Colorado Labor Advocate,
organ of 59 AFL affiliates, declared
editorially that the! Johnson reso-
lution held hope for a “just and
peaceful settlement of the Korean
war’ and deserved “serious
thought” by U.S. policy makers.
Stating that the resolution had
been “called appeasement and other
nasty names,” the editorial com-
mented:

“We don’t think it’s appease-

ment unless the very act of end-
ing the war is to be considered
appeasement.”
@ Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of
Cleveland declared that the John-
son resolution, “shouid have been
introduced 11 month ago (and)
provides the opportunity of im-
mediate negotiations” in the Ko-
rean war.

A former president of the Zion-
ist organization of America and
a member of the Jewish agency,
Rabbi Silver declared:

“The only government which

represents the Chinese today is
the Peking government and peace
in Korea can only be negotiated
with the Peking government.”
@ Carl Stellaté, president of Ford
Local 600 of the CIO Uniteq Auto
Workers, spoke to two member-
ship meetings of Ford. Press Steel
and Motor Building workers urg+
ing them to back the Johnson
resolution.

He related how he and the three
other top officers, Pat Rice, vice
president; William Hood, record-
ing secretary, and
financial secretary, along with PAC
Director Percy Llewellyn went to
Washington and met with John-
son, informing him of the local’s

Speaking on an NBC radio pro-
gram, Johnson said:

“In my opinion there’s no way
to keep the limited war with China
from developing into a full-scale
war. The logical thing to do
therefore is for the United Nations
to halt the terrible slaughter in
Korea before it matures into full-

scale war, which it must do unless
it is halted.”

Johnson read his resolution to
the radio audience and said he
hoped church groups, women’s
clubs, trade unions and civic or-
ganizations “will demand prompt
action on it.”

The Senator said that Korea is
a testing ground for the world’s
ability to negotiate peace. “If we
cannot settle this conflict wheré
conditions now are so ripe for
settlement, we must confess im-
potency to negotiate peace any-
where, If we wait for uncondi-
tional surrender, before we start
developing peace terms, we better
start preparing for 100 years of
war.” :

British Columbia Peace Council has set aside the week
June 18-24 for a special series of activities around the slogan
“Stop the killing in Korea now!”

In announcing the council’s .program, Ray Gardner,
executive secretary, said: “The first anniversary of the Ko-

rean war falls on June 25. We
feel..the most.appropriate way to
mark this anniversary is to do our
utmost to bring the slaughter to
an end.

“As-so many men and women,
on the right and on the left, have
stressed it is futile slaughter. Sen-
ator Edwin C. Johnson, Democrat
from Colorado, in placing an end-
the-war resolution before the US.
Senate, has pointed out that the
‘North Koreans and South Koreans,
the Chinese and the United Na-
tions have suffered more than 1,-
000,000 casualties with the only
tangible result so far the indescrib-
ible misery which has been heaped
upon the Korean people.”

Raising the Pacific Tribune’s
circulation in these crucial days
when the issue of peace or war is
being decided is one of the most
important tasks facing B.C. peace
workers. The manner -in which
press clubs approach this task is
an indication of extent of their un-
derstanding of the role of the
peace press and the peace move-
ment itself. a a a

The fight for peace is a complex
struggle. It jneludes the collec-
tion of signatures for a Five-Power
Peace Pact: the wage struggle;
action in defense of civil liberties;

and the extension of the circula-
tion of such fighting labor papers
as the Pacific Tribune.

Last week’s front page story in
the PT described how two small
children burned to death in a slum
shack on West Second, and point-
ed out that more tragedies of this
nature will occur because of the
government’s policy of curbing
home-building and diverting funds
into preparations for war.

Copies of the paper were distri-
buted in the block this week, and

neighbors who witnessed the trag-

edy agreed with the PT that hous-
ing conditions in the area invited
further disasters.

Use of the paper in this manner
—getting residents in shum areas
to agitate for a housing program’
as opposed to a war prog is
part of the fight for peace.
