AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 1.4, 1999 Salmon deal ignores rights of aboriginals Dear Sir: [have concerns about both the content of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and the pro- cess that federal fisheries minister David Anderson followed in his negotiations with the Americans. The process that the fisheries minister followed is a flagrant violation of the rights of all Canadians and in particular, the constitu- tionally protected rights of aboriginal people. Aboriginal people were not consulted on the con- leats of the treaty, It is one thing to ignore provincial government officials and stake-holder representation, but it is quite another thing lo totally ignore the con- stitutionally protected rights of First Nations people, Because Section 35(1) of the constitution has priority over sport and commercial interests, Mr. Anderson is obligated to include aboriginal people at the treaty negotiations. The Delgannukw decision clearly states that aboriginal people must be consulted before there is infringement on tribal lands or resources on those tribal lands. My. Anderson can ignore The flood Dear Sir: The June 30 issue of Thee Terrace Standard featured a thank you from the residents of Skeena Street to the many volunteers who lelped us cope with the flood on June 16, A name absent from the list was Graeme Geeraert (guess who organized the ad and would never: mention his own name). Graeme, too, gave countless hours. It was Graeme and Rich McDaniels who, by neces- sity, showed leadership and organization in coordinating the available resources, Our family;can:thank the ;|° Bohle family,“West” Fraser, slalf, E.T. The destruction of the sal- mon habitat will continue on both sides of the border be- cause the resource exirac- tion industries know that there are funds available to clean up their mess, The treaty idea of conser- wise men, ollce you accept American money for the so- called conservation projects, it is the Amercians’ under- standing, not ours, that they now have unrestricted rights to our salmon. In- reality, the onus for conservation will fall on Ca- nadians stake holders. Ray Guno, New Aiyansh, B.C. Penalty box for Mr. Clark Dear Sir: Premier Clark has no time for a federal incentive sharing plan to reduce the ‘exorbilant cost structures facing our NHL hockey teams and their players as they may have to contemplate migration south to survive. A Canadian sports heritage is callously marginalized by the Premier who can instead see fit to promote a portfolio of palatial monuments to himself and his parly’s re-election hopes, all with massive oullays of public funds with hastily cobbled together shaky busi- hess plans, Glen Clark.and.his. NDP will do backilips, sitmmer- saults, and pirouettes in endless concessions to keep the gazillion dollar big U-S. studio movie and T.V. moguls productions here, This same government will walk highwire tightropes and do juggling acts to contribute first $200 million, now $300 million or more of our money toward a Van- couver prime waterfront convention centre and ultra- luxury Mariott hotel chain as part of a nearly $1 billion mega-project under the assumption it will be largely laxpayer-supporled province and nation-wide. There's also the newly crealed Vancouver Port Authority, with a borrowing cap up to $200 million, who will be a longterm beneficiary of this development including the extra cruiseship facility by only putting forlh 4 $28 million share. ‘This same B.C. cabinet that can dance waltzes to proponents of their political whims will then register this affluent seaside undertaking out of province to ¢s- cape the public’s watchful purview while slagging our pro hockey, What happened to the Premier’s social housing, edu- calion, health care and leaky condos diatribes?
