KERMODE! TRADING opened its doors recently in this renovated frame house on Highway 16. The shop offers a broad range of gift and art items in a relaxing atmosphere. ' The idea; began when Glen and a frierid from Alberta were’ looking for a special gift and couldn’t find quite what they ' -were looking for. Glen saw the old house at 4525 Highway 16 West: and thought, ‘“‘It’s the perfect location.’? From there, _ the ideag-flew. . . - . Last’ Noveniber, Glen . “ap- proached the owner of the prop- _ erty, Epp. Talstra, with the idea to rent ‘and rettovate the home: - for, use as ‘a gift shop and. quickly made ‘arrangements to. re-locate the tenants from fhe. house. - By March 1 of this . ‘year, * ‘renovations were beginning. The ” first step was to take.a power ” gaw to some of the non-bearing walls to: uncover the rustic . fireplace. and . beautiful hard- "wood d floors. Glen says, “‘It was , on really run. We did all the ripping out.’’ He hired one carpenter to follow along behind repairing and replacing. Painters, carpet layers, electricians, plumbers and furnace repairmen came and went, until the unadorned quali- ty of the house started to shine through. Glen attended gift shows in Edmonton and Vancouver and visited craftspeople on Van- couver Island. By May 2, the shop was ready for public view- ‘i “ing.
