HOLD ON @ L Tl SEE STORY BELOW G The Diefenbaker government took a big step this week icward further tightening the draw Canada closer to acquiring nuclear weapons. Without any prior notice the Prime Minister announc- ed in the House of Commons Monday that Canada had en- tered into an agreement with the U.S. to acquire 66-U.S. Voodoo aircraft. Under this agreement the five RCAF squadrons now in Canada will be armed with the U.S. plane. This decision by the ‘Tory government further integrates Canada’s defence with the U.S. military. It is the: fourth ma- jor U.S. weapon introduced in Canada’s armed forces. The others are the Bomarc, CF-104 fighter and the Honest John artillery rocket. The Diefenbaker govern- ment is obviously “American- izing’? Canada’s armed forces, and reducing Canada’s defen- ces. to. a mere extension of U.S. military forces in North America. Commenting from Ottawa, the well-known Ottawa cor- respondent Charles Lynch, said ‘‘acquisition. of the Voo- doo supersonic fighter for the RCAF provides the most solid indication yet that the govern- ment accepts the inevitability of nuclear weapons for Can- adian forces.” He points out that “without nuclear weapons for attack purposes they would be con- fined to a ‘birdwatching’ role.”’ Thus the four major wea- pons acquired by the Canad- ian government for’, ‘““defence”’ can only reach their full po- tential if armed with nuclear warheads. Obviously, the Tor- ies are consciously ;creating a situation under which they will seek to blackmail the Canadian people into later accepting a decision to ac- quire nuclear arms. This plot by the Canadian government must be defeated. before it is too late. Canadians must demand an early decision from the gov- ernment that Canada will step out of the nuclear arms race and refuse to accept nuclear weapons. The petition now being cir- culated by the Radiation Haz- ards Committee against nuc- lear arms assumes greater importance than ever. Now is the time for patriot- grip of the U.S. military on Canada, and to ic Canadians to renew their | ments, and for an independ- demand for disengagement | | ent policy of Canadian neu- from U.S. military entangle- trality and peace.
