HINA’S leading peper, the

People’s Daily, has come out
firmly in favor of free con-
tention between different
schools of art and thought.

Branding as “utter disortion”
the idea that such contention

would lead to “chaos” and
would shake. Communist
theory, the paper says that

on the contrary, Marxism de-
veloped in the process of strug-
gle against antagonistic ideas.

Supressing or banning cap-
italist ideas would mean that
the Communist party had not
fulfilled its task, but had mere-
ly riegated it. Actually, the
paper says, truth always em-
erges the victor in the struggle
against untruth.

The paper’s editorial was on
the policy poetically expressed
as “Let flowers of many kinds
blossom and diverse shcools of
thought contend.”

During the past six months,
the paper reveals, heated de-
bate has been going on in
philosophy, literature, econo-
mics, history, law and biology.
Educational courses have been
broadened.

Speaking to those who ex-
pressed nervousness about this
policy, the paper observes:
“The question now is not that
policy has been carried too far,
but that too. little has been
done.”

Pointing out that even when
capitalist ideas were dominh-
ant, they never hindered the
development of Communist
theory, the paper says: :

“Marxism is not afraids.of
criticism by. erroneous ideas”
and “if in the course of conten-
tion new correct points emerge
they will benefit Marxism.

enrich Marxism.”

The People’s Daily says the
struggle of ideas will continue
a long time but unlike former
sytsems where suppression was
used, socialism has the support
of the people and they should
be encouraged to discuss dif-

ferent ideas to enable them
consciously to sreach correct
conclusions.

“Marxists should rely on the
strength of their own theories
and results of their own in-
vestigations to convince non-
Marxists, prove the validity of
Marxism and enrich it.”

In debate with others, the
paper Opines, Communists
must reason, analyse and avoid
browbeating or adopting a one-
sided, arbitrary, non-analytical,
metaphysical, doctrinaire and
sectarian attitude.

Marxists, the editorial con-
cludes, should propagate Marx-
ism.

Country Places, written by a
Nanaimo man, Eric Dowson,
and published in Britain by
Arthur H. Stockwell Ltd., I-
fracombe, Devon.

Country Places is not an
attempt to be clever or liter-
ary or “avante garde.’ Dowson
himself says that he has tried
to express ‘his feelings in
simple language readily un-
derstood by ordinary working
folk like himself. And the
reader does take pleasure in
feeling that this poetry is in
fact, natural and warm, like
the quiet musings of a man en-
gaged in some carefree work
conducive to thought.

Though presumably born in
Britain and sometimes think-
ing fondly back to the old
land, Dowson nevertheless
shows that he has taken to
this country, worked in its
fields and forests, travelled in
its various parts, and found
it a good land to live in.

Places about Dowson’s love of
rural life and the beauty of
nature.. But there is much
more than An import-
ant feature in his poems is a
kind of everyday philosophy
which is probably common ta
many working Canadians.

In “Lords of Creation” he
launches a thrust against. ra-
dioactive weapons “that will
blow ourselves into Hell.’ In
“The Two Gods’’ he indicates
his distaste for bigotry and
his belief in common sense
attitude to life. And in “The
Dreamer” he speaks of “A
new world men may find —-
“Where none shall be slave ‘to

And none shall lack for bread,

Where all men shall reap the
blessings

By earth and science shed.
