/12. November 4th, 1974 Ald.Laking re $17,420.00, which included sandblasting of the lower portion was received in answer to a tender call this year, and pointing out that in deciding to undertake the work with City crews, the total cost, including sandblasting of the whole structure, amounted to $13,503.00, for a saving of approximately $4,000.00. Alderman Keryluk stated he wished to publicly commend the Works & Utilities Superintendent, under whose direction this superior work was carried out. Alderman Laking advised that the Hallowe'en Dance, under the direction Hallowe'en Dance Acting-Mayor- eligibility to vote—Mun. Elections of the City's Recreation Department, was a great success with approximately 300 in attendance and no problems. Acting-Mayor Alderman Thompson referred to the forthcoming Municipal Elections and he requested the City Clerk to clarify the situation with respect to those not on the current List of Electors. The City Clerk advised that under present Provincial legislation, there is no way a person can now get on the List or be permitted to vote in the November election, and although when people cume in to a polling station, the Returning Officer will permit them to vote by putting the ballots in envelopes and returning them to the City Clerk, if it is determined a Voter's name was missed, the ballot will count, but if not, the ballot will be destroyed. The City Clerk pointed out that the problem is that some people did not fill out Voter's Registration Cards and therefore nothing can be done to permit them to vote. Moved by Alderman Keryluk: Seconded by Alderman Laking That the City Clerk be instructed to write to the Provincial Government immediately requesting special permission for resident property owners at least to vote in the forthcoming Municipal Election by being sworn in by another resident elector as a duly qualified elector in the City of Port Coquitlam and in this way give every resident elector an opportunity to vote. Withdrawn. Prior to the question being called on the foregcing proposed resolution a discussion ensued, and Alderman Laking pointed out that many residents cannot vote because of changing from property owners to residents and have therefore been eliminated from the Voters List. The City Clerk mentioned that the Legislature is sitting now, and all that would be required would be to add a few words to the Municipal Act to have the situation corrected.
