rrr genre 2 AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 16, 2005 n CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Road maintenance | needs to be improved Dear Sir: 4 On Monday, Jan. 24 my * husband Gunter. and | were driving to Smithers for ‘a week's skiing. It was a beautiful, sunny day and the temperature was like spring. At Terrace, we were on -Hwyl6 admiring - the beautiful scenery. Our joy suddenly turned _intoa nightmare, Approximately 2kms past Cedarvale our car skidded on black ice. Gunter desper- ately tricd to keep control around the bend but the car flipped down -a 20ft em- bankment and landed upside down with the roof smashed ” - above us. ~ We were trapped by our - tight scat belts and needed help from. someone. We - hoped and. prayed the Grey- hound bus would stop. More sand, following us please > Dear Sir:. I would like to know who determines when and -how much sand and salt is . applied to our roads. ‘Is there a specific length © of time.for a’road to be ‘layered in ‘ice before .it’s pen this spring, our roads ‘tended to? Does it matter how many people travel each road in a day or, even worse, who dies? . Who decides who is im-. portant enough and who is not? Is it lack of money or bad management that is.to blame for people dying on our roads? Does a depart- ment in the government pick and choose or does a company that bids the low- est get to decide who lives or dies? The weather has been milder lately but it might freeze and rain and freeze again. Even if it doesn’ ql - hap- will be death traps again in the fall. Will it be-one of your own or will it be one of mine that has their life cut short because of extremely poor care of our roads and highways. I find it unimaginable to think that with the taxes we pay that one truck can hit. the ditch because of sheer ice and no maintenance (salt or sand) and the very next day a young man can die on thatsame road. I have been waiting for the right time to write this letter and isn’t it sad that it. even has to be done. We are all shocked and appalled when someone we know and love doesn't make it home from work one day. We mourn, then we. carry on until the next life is taken.. We have to stop being too complacent and simply sitting back to see who will die next. . I don’t know how: to fix this problem but certainly someone in a position of government authority or civic hierarchy can take some .time to save. some lives. I was going to request some straight forward an- swers but [| would really rather you spent that ‘time on developing realistic and practical plans for your next and every follow- ing cold snap and ensuing death traps. This is not the time to save money. How about saving some lives instead. Bonnie Klassen, Terrace, B.C. Well, itdid and many pas- sengérs came out and pulled us out of the wreckage. The driver of the bus was furious at the road condi- tions because he, too, skid- ded- around the same corner. He radioed the police and ‘ambulance. Another van following the bus also went off the road and smashed into boulders in the deep ditch below, Before the police arrived the sand truck suddenly ap- peared and began sanding the whole area, Where was the sand truck before? Did he wait for the radio call to come and sand it? This accident would nev- er have happened if the road had been properly sanded, It was 2:30 p.m. when this took place with the sun shining and roads clear ‘ex- cept for thick ice banks that were not removed by the " road maintenance crew. When ‘we were taken to Wrinch Memorial Hospi- tal in Hazelton, the people at emergency complained about road maintenance and how poor it was. . There were four accidents that clear, warm day in the - Same area. May I suggest the contract with the road main- tenance company be can- celled and investigated, .We have been in the north. since 1968 and have driven through storms and .. “much worse conditions to © ‘newspaper, Smithers. We now realize - that road conditions are kill- ing people. ' We are not satisfied with ‘reports that say “use extreme caution — icy conditions.” ‘Does life come to a stand- still because of winter? Why cannot roads be maintained ‘and sanded like they were’. before? Iam sure if you look at statistics of accidents that “have taken ‘place .on High- ways 16 and 37 for the past five years you will find that in most cases it is road con- ditions that have caused ac-°, cidents. — We . owned an .M300 Chrysler.which is a high per- formance car and our tires were Blizzack i ice tires. We are now without a car and grateful to be alive. If. anyone else agrees _ With me and has a story to tell about road conditions, please write to your local Skeena MLA Roger Harris and transporta- tion minister Kevin Falcon. Our Kitimat. city coun- cillor, Joanne Monaghan, . would be happy- to for- ‘ward your e-mails to Vic- toria. Her e-mail’ address is jmonaghan@telus.net. We stopped at the scene -of both accidents the next day and found, to our. sur- prise, that there was no ice on the road and it was finally. © sanded. -Myrtle Prett, Kitimat, B.C.
