B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 30, 1997 @ Hoop C CaCI hamps MAYBE IT was a full moon, maybe it was Hale Bopp. Whatever it was, somehow Uplands got credit as the 1996-97 Grade seven basketball champions, when In fact it was Cassie Hall who took top honours. That's at least part of the team dis- playing their trophy to prove it. Team members included Matthew Lloyd, Dino Ro- que, Haydn Johnstone, Tim Philpott, Joel Kamlah, BJ. Gill, Cody Hanes, Sean Dusdal, Mark Viveiros and Daniel Bernard. Bantam girls make their mark in Alaska OUR BANTAM girls soft- ball team was in Ketchikan, Alaska two weekends ago. And although they came back with a losing record, the girls made a real impres- sion. ‘The girls just got better and better and beiter,’’ says coach Nolan Beaudry. “Everyone was impressed with their play.’’ In their first game, Terrace hadn’t quite come out of their winter slumber and they lost 8-0 to the Midnight Sun, from Juneau. “They were musty,’ Beaudry says. ‘‘But they had only been on the field once this year. It took them a bit to warm up.” In the next game against Prince of Wales the girls came out with gusto. Pitcher Jenine Garneau put away batter after batter — striking out a tolal of 13 over five innings. The girls’ bats were on fire too. First base Jeanine Rutherford knocked one out of the park in the premiere inning to score the first three runs of the game, The girls went on to win 16-3. In the third match, against Ketchikan, the hometown heroes came out strong, scoring three runs in the first. But Terrace bounced back in the third and fourth in- nings, taking one in the third, and three in the fourth on a home run by Sarah Fisher. That put Terrace to go up 4-3. Unfortunately they couldn’t hang on and Ketchikan scored three more in the fifth to take the win. The last match saw Ter- race go up against Juneau B, the 1996 Alaska State Champions, in a night game under the bright lights. The champs hit fast and hard, scoring four mins in the first. Terrace fought back, chipping away at their lead, but they couldn't quite pull it off and Juneau won 7-6, “The trip was an excellent experience for the girls,” Beaudry says. ‘‘And a great ‘way to start the season.’’ Rugby club on a roll OUR NORTHMEN Rugby Club remains undefeated in regular season play follow- ing a 22-12 rout of the Prince Rupert Scamen, April 19. It was the first home game of the season for the Northmen, who came out with what is becoming their typical slow start, Down 12-0 at the mid- game break, the Norihmen made some tactical changes of man power and started executing their game plan. Two second-half tries and a conversion added another 12 points to the Northmen’s lly, while the Seamen came up blank in the second stanza. That gave the Northmen a 22-12 win at full time. The Northmen were in Victoria last weekend defending the honour of the North Coast Rugby Union at the Columbia Cup Third Division Provincial Championships. The winner of the NCRU’s previous season represent the league at the following Spring’s playoff weekend, The Northmen, like other teams in the colder climes of B.C., are at a dis- advaniage going to the championships having only played three or four games. Meanwhile, their lower mainland and Vancouver Is-_ - land counterparts are just wrapping up a 20-game sea- son.
