B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 26, 1994 JOHN OMAN Wartime | recalled ONGTIME Terrace resident John Onan passed away sudden- ly while standing in line with his fellow comrades in the Nov. 11, 1993 Remembrance Day parade. . Join Emil Oman was born July 29, 1923 in Prince George, B.C. and was an only child to parents John Augusia Oman and Maria Rosalind Oman. Both had come from Sweden. John’s father, while living in Sweden, was a diamond driller who had gone to Peru to train and work. He had belonged to the Swedish police force and later left Sweden and went to the United States for a short while before coming to Canada.. ; They settled in Prince George, B.C. where he worked as a pros- pecior, miner and trapper in the Barkerville and Wells area. Once selticd, he sent for his fiancee, Maria Rosalind, who was working as a professional seam- stress in Sweden. Maria and her two sisters owned their own sewing factory there, before selling it and buying a candy factary. Both John’s parents have since passed away in Prince George, John grew up in Prince George until Grade 9, During those years he competed in ski jumping and cross country skiing. At 12 years old he competed in ski jumping in the Wells area and wonseveral trophys. John’s cross country skis were hamd made by his uncle and his ski boots were made in Norway. These are tow on display at the Terrace Heritage Park Museum. After John left school he went" to work on the railroad - with engineering crews on steel bridge structures. At 18, John went to Vancouver and enlisted in the army first. He went back east for training before being sent overseas, He served in England with the Scottish in- fantry. Afier his discharge he teturned back home to Prince George. He worked in a sawmill after the war and then at ihe Prince George planing mill. . It was at this time he met itis wife Dorothy Doli, who was born Jan. 12, 1927 in Acme, Alberta to Ray and Leana Doll. Dorothy’s father later moved to Kitwanga and statted a sawmill there. Dorothy grew up there and later moved to Prince George. She found a job in a bakery and mict John at a dance. They got married on May 22, 1946 in Kitwanga, with Rev. Hayhurst presiding, Earl Hobenshield and June Range stood in for them. After a small celebration, they went back to Prince George to live. Two sons were born there — John Jr. on Sept. 9, 1947 and Patrtick on Scpl. 13, 1949, In 1951 John decided to move to Kitimat because of work there. But because of lack of accomoda- tion for family, he went instead to work in Kitwanga at Dorathy’s father’s mill. (Thal mill is now owned by the Hobcenshield Bros.) In Kitwanga, son Gerry was born on Sept 9, 1953 and son Darcy artived on Nov. 17, 1956. In’ 1957. John. Oman starled working in Terrace for Valeniine and Clark Pole, across (ho tracks from the Co-op. A year later, John bought their home at the comer of Straume and Eby and moved his family there. When the pole yard closed down, John went to work for Skeena Forest Froducts driving a cranc belunging to Bill McRae, But John fell on the ice at work and broke his leg one day and was no longer able to work there. He took over after Mr. O’Boyle and worked there until retirement in 1986. John was also a volunteer firefighter from 1961 to 1981. He was a dedicated Legion member for 35 years. He was a volunteer with Search and Res- cue, he was president of the Credit Union, and he served on the board of directors of the Ter- tace Co-op. He was a _ dedicated Legion member for 35 years. Son Robert was bor on Dec. 17, 1959 and their daughter Sherri was born on Dec. 18, 1965 "at Mills Memorial Hospital. All “their”: children’ went to’ school in Terrace. John and Dorothy lost their son WEDDING DAY: John and Doroth in Kitwanga in 1947. Gerald 20 years ago in a car acci- dent. Three of the children are still living in Terrace — daughter Sherri, and sons Robert and Patrick. Their sen Darcy lives in Bumaby. While in Terrace, John was very involved in the community and was loved by all for being the kind and generous ‘man that he was. Six years ago he had his first heart attack. On Nov. 11, 1993 John died of a heart attack while on parade with fellow comrades. He is buried at the Terrace Cemetery. , Service was held at the Anglican Church, officiated by Rey. Dean Houghton. John Oman received a full honour guard from the Royal Ca- nadian Legion, Branch 13, with each member saluting and placing a poppy on the casket.
