At thal time, Search and Rescue pointed out the 400 sq.ft. trailer it occupied — it’s located behind city hall —- was becoming too cramped for the growing number of members, lacked adequate Storage space for equipment and did not even have washroom facilities. The group had been told the city did not have any money for a new building and if would be too expensive to hook up the trailer to ihe water and sanitary sewer sys- tem. The problems Search and Res- cue face have not gone away and it has again asked the city for as- sistance. ; Myhr said the group needs ap- Moose hunter fined TERRACE — A 28-year-old Kitimat man has been convicted of pitlamping. Better buy a donkey TERRACE — Northern resi- denis will find transportation more expensive if recommenda- lions of a royal commission are accepted, says Skeena NDP MP Jim Fulton, . The royal commission on na- tional passenger transportation wants an end to subsidies for rail, road, air and ferry travel, In particular, it calls for toll booths or other user fees on high- ways, eliminating VIA Rail and user pay for ferry services, But that will mean higher costs for people who live in remoter arcas, says Fulton. +.° “The idea of using toll Booths” ~ _ and Armstrong floorin Ifyou've been waiting for the best time to buy carpet, now is the time. “FINAL DAYS! Fulton also objected 10 the proposal to eliminate VIA Rail, saying the royal commission made that recommendation without first looking at what af- fect that would have. He pointed out Search and Res- cuc is regularly used by the RCMP who are confident enough of their abilities to give them re- sponsibility for the conduct of search operations. Myhr said volunteers put in 3,700 hours in the past year and Search and Rescue received no government money with which to- purchase equipment. In the case of the water rescue team, member Paul Kelly said they had to buy their own gear at a cost of $3-4,000 cach. ~ As the only trained group in northem B.C,, he added, they could be called to deal with situa-, lions over an area extending from Bella Coola to the Yukon border.
