The event will be spon- sored by Farwest Sports, in conjunction with the Seafest Holiday celebra- tions. Three-person teams must have at least one female member, Each competitor either runs eight kilometers, bikes 30 kilometers or swims one kilometer. Plans call for a special competitors’ dinner on Saturday, July 5, and the big race on Sunday, July 6. Mini-basketball champions Team number four came out as champlons at the Terrace boys and giris' mini-basketball tournament held late in April. Coached by Steve Dewacht and Stacey Buteau, the players are Bert Salanski, Brian Allen, Mike Parker, Heath Muller, Paul Brock, Fraser McKay, Duncan Nixon, Pam Sampare, Irene Bretherick, Jennifer Brack, Erika Lloyd-Jones, Kim Karlsen and Six weeks of intense practice should put the Terrace Northmen Rugby team in top shape for another season in the North Coast Rugby Union League. This four-team circuit with teams from Ter- race, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Smithers, kicked off its schedule on the weekend when Terrace hosted Kitimat and Rupert hosted Smithers. The Northmen are. holding regular workouts every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m., at Skeena School. Any newcomers interested in playing are urged to attend. The Northmen have eight regular season games, plus numerous exhibitions and tourna- ment matches. They also have some seven-a-side contests. Mini-basketball tourney a big success Team Four, under co- coaches Stacey Buteau and Steve Dewacht, recovered from an open- ing game loss to win five Straight games and cap- ture the first annual Ter- race mini-basketball tournament for elemen- tary school boys and girls, on April 26. In the championship game, Team Four down- ed Team Three 41-36. Team Three was the team that defeated Team Four 33-30 in the open- ing game of this five- team, round-robin series. In semi-final ‘action, Team Four knocked off Team Two 46-32 while Team Three was beating Team One 35-14. Each team played four games in the round-robin portion. The teams with the four best records then advanced to semi- final action. At the end of round- robin play, Teams Four, Three and One were all tied with three-win, one- loss records. To deter- Third place winners Team number two picked up third place at the Terrace boys and girls’ mini-basketball tournament held on April 26. The co- coaches are Darcie Wadley and Harpal Manhas. The players are Paul Manhas, Jeff McKay, Dough Worsfold, Tim Burkett, Justin Briad, Richie Piatonni, Kent Young, Penny-Lou Kulmper, Kyla Palaglan, Lynn Hallman, Paula Brock, Bernadette Chaboyer, and Heather Thompson. 4 mine positions for playoffs, organizers went ona points-for and points-against system. Team Four took first place with a plus-28. Team Three had a plus- seven for second spot, while Team One had a plus-five for third overall. Team Two grab- bed the fourth playoff spot with a one-win, three-loss record, Team Five ended up losing all of their games. Here are scores from all the - round-robin games: Team One edged Team Two 38-37; Team Three beat Team Four 33-30; Team One down- ed Team Three 34-23; Team Two took out Team Five 41-35; Team One defeated Team Five 37-32; Team Four beat Team Two 32-24; Team Three bounced Team Two 38-30; Team Three defeated Team Five 35-31; Team Four down- ed Team One 31-19; and Team Four knocked off Team Five 31-30. As indicated by the scores, all teams were closely matched. At least 10 players were selected from each Terrace school except Copper Mountain. Each team of boys played half a game, while each team of girls did likewise. It should be stressed that this was not a school sports event. It was set up strictly through Ter- race mini-basketball which operated a league of boys during the winter, The main organizer was Karen Evans, a teacher at Clarence Michiel School who made all the ar- rangements for the series to be played at Veritas School and Clarence Michiel. Sports | calendar The 1986 S-K-B Molsons Wreckers Ice- Breaker tournament for men’s slo-pitch teams is on this weekend at River- side and Rotary Parks from Friday to Sunday.
