Snetnetreneseinementneenen a a _ THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER f j REGIONAL CONVENTION CONSTITUTIONAL CHAN For the information of the member- ship, changes to the Regional Constitu- tion were adopted by the Regional Con- vention held in Vancouver, B.C., January 26-30, 1976. - Amendments to the Regional Consti- tution adopted by Convention action shall not be finalized until sixty (60) days from the close of the Convention, and such proposed Convention changes shall be published in the “Lumber Worker” and copies of such proposed constitu- tional changes shall be sent to each Local Union within ten (10) days after the close of the Convention. Any time within this specified sixty- day period, the membership, through their Local Unions, may petition the Regional Secretary-Treasurer to initiate a referendum on any amendment adopted by such Convention action. If the Regional Secretary-Treasurer receives a number of petitions repre- sentative of one-third (1/3) of the total Regional Council Membership, he shall proceed with the referendum within ten _ (10) days following the sixty (60) day period specified. The following constituional changes were adopted by the Regional Conven- tion. WAGES AND EXPENSE ALLOWANCES ARTICLE Vi! (7) fa] Delete Section (1) (a), which presently reads: “The salary of the Regional Director shall be $392.00 per week. The salary of the Regional Secretary-Treasurer shall be $375.20 per week. Full-time Vice-Presidents shall receive $375.20 per week.” Following is the proposed change: “The salary of the Regional Director shall be $468.60 per week. The salary of the Regional Secretary-Treasurer shall be $441.80 per week. Full-time Vice-Presi- dents shall receive $441.80 per week.” the NDP as the political arm of labour. B.C. FED. APPOINTS GABELMANN Colin Gabelmann, the former New Democratic Party MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour, who lost his seat in the recent provincial election, has been appointed the B.C. Federation ef Labour’s Political Educa- tion Director. . Before his election as an MLA, Colin was closely as- sociated with the Federation and did an excellent job as its Legislative Director. IWA BACKS NDP The New Democratic Party was given a strong vote of confidence by the Convention delegates when the Con- ference by an overwhelming majority approved a resolution for the IWA to reaffirm its position of endorsing COLIN GABELMANN ARTICLE VII [2] Delete Section (2), which presently reads: ““Regional Vice-Presidents, International Board Members, Appointees, Committee Members, and Trustees, who are temporary employees, shall be paid $55.00 per day for all days employed by the Regional Council, based on a 5-day work week. No temporary employee shall be entitled to receive in ex- cess of $55.00 gross earnings for any day while employed by the Regional Council. In determining the maximum allowable amount, earnings shall be deemed to be earnings from wage sources.” Following is the proposed change: “Regional Vice-Presidents, International -Board Members, Appointees, Commit- tee Members, and Trustees, who are temporary employees, shall be paid $65.00 per day for all days employed by the Regional Council, based on a 5-day work week. No temporary employee shall be entitled to receive in excess of $65.00 gross earnings for any day while employed by the Regional Council. In determining the maximum allowable amount, earnings shall be deemed to be earnings from wage sources.” SAFETY ARTICLE XIi (2) Delete Section reads: “The delegates to Regional Delegated Safety Conferences shall be elected by and from the Local Unions, with the exception that all Regional Safety Council Officers and Local Union Safety Directors shall be duly accred- ited delegates to the Conferences.” Following is the proposed change: “The delegates to Regional Delegated Safety and Health Conferences shall be elected by and from the Local Unions, with the exception that all Regional Safety and Health Council Officers and Local Union Safety and Health Directors shall be duly accredited delegates to the Conferences.” (2), which presently DELEGATES DONATE $670 TO UFW Following a stirring address by United Farm Worker’s Rep- ‘ resentative Dale Van Pelt, Regional delegates contributed $670.00 to aid the Farm Workers battle the Teamsters for certification of the Cali- fornia farm workers. Van Pelt told the Conference that his Union was making headway with the workers but that it was a difficult task because of the strong opposi- tion of the Teamster Union and the restrictive California labour legislation. During his speech he praised the IWA for its generous support in the past and con- cluded by saying that he knew that any needed support in the future would be forthcoming. ARTICLE XII (5) Delete Section reads: “The function of the Regional Safety Council shall be: (a) To formulate and adopt safety policy matters of Regional Council No. 1. (b) To develop and co-ordinate safety and safety training programs.
