"MAKER OF FORTUNES" ~ Ever since its discovery — in vast reservoirs beneath the surface of the earth — petro- leum has been the maker of fortunes, And, like most of nature’s resources needed by a grow- ing and hungry world, most of the wealth derived from the petroleum industries has gone to a privileged few. But the pattern may not last for long. The co-operative movement — whose members feel that through joint buying and sell- ing they can provide for their needs without the profit mo- tive — has made a significant inroad both into the produc- tion and distribution of petro- leum products. Today there are eight out- lets in southern British Co- lumbia which operate as Co-op Petroleum Services. They are located at Dun- can, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Al- berni, Burnaby, Mission, Canoe and Genelle. Operated by consumer co- operatives already established THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER and respected in their com- munities, these operations are built and supplied in conjunc- tion with the B.C. Co-opera- tive Wholesale Society, a non- profit organization represent- ing some 200 local co-ops in the province. In some areas, such as in Duncan, two co-ops joined to- gether to build a bulk plant and retail facilities for mem- bers of both their organiza- tions. All of the operations of Co- op Petroleum Services pro- vide home heating fuels for their customers and most of them also provide automotive gasolines from service sta- tions. Today thousands of con- sumers in British Columbia are able to buy a complete range of Co-op Petroleum products, including gasolines for cars, trucks, and farm equipment, lubricants, and home heating fuel delivered in modern tank trucks. Bearing the “Co-op” label, many of these products come ... how big should an airline be? Co-op Petroleum Services — like other co-operatives are non-profit organizations. Earnings from operations are considered joint savings of the members and are event- ually returnable to the mem- bers. In all cases, prices and the quality of service are com- petitive with those of other suppliers, Co-op Petroleum Services has one and only one pur- pose: to meet the needs of its member-customers. With such a goal, it is a strange and welcome new- comer to the “black gold” in- dustry. And with such a goal it is here to stay, as more and more co-operatively owned petroleum service plants and stations appear on the streets and highways of British Columbia.
