work of critical importance, such as the Save Georgia Strait Alliance. Through wide-

ranging public discussion, establish criteria for the best possible use of public funds.

° Institute a mandatory public review process for all BC lottery funds and return their
administration to the local level. -

° Strengthen and expand the bottle return law to include all glass containers which can be
re-used. Establish guidelines for the standardization of such containers so that they can be
brand name interchangeable.

° Work with local organizations to develop consumer education programs to reduce the
consumption of non-renewable resources, environmentally harmful products, and unnec-

essary packaging. |

© Initiate and fund an independent educational program to inform the public of the
damage done to the marine environment by the use of toxic materials in homes and
industry, and to create educational materials that are useful to the general public.

° Develop curricula and materials for elementary through secondary levels to provide
students with a thorough understanding of the ecological imperatives that are neces

to sustain life in this region. Such programs should integrate all disciplines and include a
study of the interconnectedness of all life and the human impact on other species.

° Support and encourage the development of integrated environmental education pro-
grams in which information, resources and action projects are shared among colleges,
universities, schools, youth groups and community organizations.

® Using successful locally-developed native studies programs as a guideline, develop, in
cooperation with native bands, native studies curricula and materials for native and non-
native students at all levels.

¢ Develop environmental resource and communications centres in each community of the
region as an adjunct to the library system, to enable local non-governmental organizations
to help, support, and inform each other on common issues. These centres should be
developed as interactive, public use facilities that will make available computer network-
ing, information systems and staff to train people to use the resources.

® Work with the appropriate government agencies and local organizations to develop
programs in each community to recycle all materials for which there are uses and markets,
to steckpile those that cannot be recycled, and to provide information to the public about
these programs so that all who want to participate can do so.

e Work with the appropriate government agencies and private industry to improve

garbage pick-up services at docks and marinas.
