Expert joins race to understand SARS A MATHEMATICIAN from Terrace is part of a unique team involved in the fight against SARS and other infectious dis- eases, Dr. James Watmough is one of 14 Canadian and U.S, experts trying to map how SARS — Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome— spreads using computer models so it can be con- tained, models of the virus itself; how SARS affects the human body once it’s been contracted; and how the disease spreads through the population. The project is supported by a national research net- work called MITACS (Mathematics of Informa- tion Technology and Com- plex Systems) that brings industry and aca- demics together to solve big pro- blems, The team's project is called Transmis- sion Dynamics and Spatial Spread of Infectious Dis- eases! Modelling, Predic- tion and Control. The first stage of the project is to develop a model for SARS based on previous models developed for other, similar infectious diseases. Watmough, a Caledo- nia Secondary grad with degrees fram UBC, UVic, and Virginia Tech, is a mathematics professor at the University of New Brunswick in the depart- ment of mathematics and statistics. He’s married and has two children, They live in Fredericton. By assembling experts from so many different dis- cipline, the group may be able to provide faster re- commendations for public health.
