These biffies won’t be iffy HIGHWAYS officials deny they're closing any toilets at rest areas along Hwys 16 and 37, Steve Uyesugi, opera- tions manager for the Bulkley-Stikine highways district, said he’s unaware of any such plans. -He was reacting to a ‘Nov. 22 vote by Kitimat- Stikine. regional district directors to. write the high- ways ministry condemning the move. - Kitimat director Joanne Monaghan and Terrace’s Rich McDaniel accused the ministry of closing toi- let access at some rest slops.- “They've taken out the toilets and they've taken out the picnic benches already,” Monaghan said. “They never told us before hand, they just took every- thing out.”. _“Maybe we should have all the bureaucrats take a tour of the north and see how long they can go wilhout stopping,” she said. “It's not like going between Burnaby and Sur- tey where there's a filling Station every two blocks, They have no idea.” She said it will mean more inconvenience for driving tourists — particu- larly seniors or families with children. “They’re going to be smelly rest areas if they don’t get those washrooms open,” predicted McDa- niel. Uyesugi said directors might be confused, adding maintenance is always re- duced somewhat in the non-tourist months. “Routinely we take in some of the tables for instance,” he — said. “Perhaps they're oaverre- acting to normal winter preparations.” The ministry did shut down one rest area in the summer along Hwy 37 at the Cranberry River. “That was mostly due to its unsafe location at the bottom of a dip,” Uye- sugi explained, He said the ministry has dropped plans to eventual- ly downgrade some full- scale rest. areas with toi- lets and tables to simpler pullouts with just litter barrels. “It was just a proposal and we decided not to pro- ceed with downgrading the Test areas lo lay-bys,” he said, adding that proposal wouldn't have~ happened for two years anyway.
