THREE PEOPLE are in
the running to be chosen
as the first-ever president
of the Nisga’a Lisims Gov-
ernment in elections ta be
held Nav. 8.

Joe Gosnell, one of the
three, is now the interim
president stemming from
his. presidency of ‘the old
Nisga’a Tribal Council.

Lisims government was
created as part of the
Nisga’a land claims treaty,

Gosnell became interim
president until such time
as cleclions could be held.

The second person run-
ning is Gary Alexcec, 51,
who is now the chief coun-
cillor of the Kincolith vil-
lage government.

He has been chief
councillor for two terms
and was that village’s
main negotiating represen-
tative during the treaty
talks.

Alexcee worked for the
Royal Bank after pradua-
ling from university. His
grandfather, Robert Ste-
wart, was one of the mem-
bers of the Nisga’a 1913
Land Committee which
petitioned the Imperial
government in England for
recognition of Nisga’a ow-
nership of the Nass Valley.

Also running is Shirley
Morven of New Aiyansh.
An administrator with the
Nisga’a school district,
Morven also traces a
lengthy involvement in
land claims back to her
grandfather, Timothy Der-
rick,

A schoo] teacher by
profession, Morven has
also been a lecturer at
UBC, UVic and at the
Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl
Nisga’a post secondary in-
stitution in the Nass Val-
ley.

Her home village is
New Aiyansh where she
has been a band council-
lor.

Whoever wins the pre-
sident’s job must live in
the Nass Valley. —

The Nov. 8 election
also features more than
2,800 Nisga‘a voters age
18 or over choosing from a
variety of candidates for
various Lisims government
positions.

And those who live in
the Nass Valley will also
be choosing their village
chief councillors and
councillors on that day.

Running for the position
of chairperson of the Li-
sims government is John
Cecil, who now works for
the native investment
company Tricorp in Prince
Rupert, and Herb Morven,
who is now finishing up a
term as chief councillor at
New Aiyansh in the Nass
Valley,

Six people are running
for the position of chair-
person, Council of Eiders.
They are Morris Haldane,
Chester Moore, Emma
Nyce, Peggy Nyce, Rod
Robinson Sr. — who is now
the Nisga’a Ambassador —
and Doris Tait.

with the old Nisga’a Tribal
Council, faces opposition

each of the three Lisims
government urban locals of
Greater Vancouver, Port
Edward/Prince Rupert and

There is advance poll-
ing Noy. 1. and there are
mail-in ballots.

The Nov. 8 polls will be
open from: 8 a.m: to 8 p.m.
