Squeezing out every moment By Rey. Douglas Schultz Zion Baptist Church IT WAS A simple drive, but ‘all of a sudden other drivers ‘Started culting in front of us. However, our driver wasn't surprised, saying it wasn’t unusual, You see, we were moving very slow, and people were getling im- patient. The one factor though that should have made a. difference was that “we were driving ina hearse. Both funeral directors in the car lamented the fact that people no longer had the respect for funeral pro- cessions thal they once bad. Instead of having an attitude of respect for the departed, funeral processions were now another traffic in- convenience to get around, as quick!y as possible. The days when people would stop until a funeral procession had passed or had made its way into the traffic flow, seemed to be long gone. Yet at one time it was not unusual for a potice escort to accompany the procession as a mark of honour. Maybe it’s because of in- vention of daylight running lights. In the past motorists could identify funeral pro- cessions because all the vehicles would have their lights on. It really should not be sur- prising, considering how our culture views death, and hence life. If these seventy or so years are all that we have, then it is important to make every moment count. If this is all that there is then anything that lengthens that . time is worth the cost, be- cause you can’t take it with you. There really is a truism here, that how a person views death will shape how they view and live life. So in our North American socicly we see untold mil- lions trying to squeeze every moment out of this shell. With plastic surgery and other medical we try to preserve that young took. Even in the field of medicine we see re- ’ search dollars being spent at an unprecedented rate trying to slow down, slop, and even reverse the aging pro- cess. - Death has been the ultimate question thal has sent man pondering, with a nagging fecling that there must be more, Some people, thinking they couldn’t find an answer, avoid thinking about it altogether. That is what I feel is driv- ing owr society. We place our dying seniors in places which meet their physical needs, and at the same time keep them out of the way. - Too many times have I heard seniors in nursing homes and seniors’ com- plexes lament the fact that no one visits because it is inconvenienl. Maybe no one visits because our seniors remind us that life has liniits, and we don’t want to be reminded. How do you view death? What is it? Is it truly the end of life? The way thal you answer this basic, funda- mental question will shape how you live today and tomorrow. Christ came and supplied the answers to the question. The question is now will anyone stop to listen, or will they ignore it like the hearse? The viewpoint expressed in this coluniw is that of the writer and mot necessary that of The Terrace Stan- dard.
