Along this coast, und a special part of its attraction, are the whales that inhabit those deep fjords and the case with which whales can be seen ‘‘in the wild’*. In the last few years, 2 new sport—you might almost call it that—has developed along the B.C. coast. It's whale watching. - Of course, fishermen dating back to the early coastal natives have always watched whales. But, taday, a widespread fasci- nation with the whale has led more und more people to want to see for themselves the largest - creatures that huve ever lived on this planet. . FAST SWIMMERS B.C. claims more than a dozen species of Cetacea (the scientific name for the order of whales and dolphins). Most of them—humpbacks, sperms, finbacks and mink whales— rarely approach close to shore. * They are fast swimmers and may dive for over an hour at a time. So, if you see them, it would still be difficult to obtain a clase look. Mast of them live in the vust open waters north of Vancouver Island to Dixon En- trance, but there is no onc plaice off the B.C. coast where. you can go andexpec? to encounter them. The surest way to see them is by boat, though they can often be viewed from shore, feeding in the shallows, The first sign of. them will be their sky-high blows. Then, if you look closely, you'll see their gray, mottled back and wide tail flukes as they dive. MURKY TRAIL If the water is clear, you can watch these up-to-!6-metre- long cows of the sea ‘‘bottom feed'’, sifting the sand for tiny shrimp-like krill and leaving a murky trail behind them, Sometimes you can follow them this way, and they may even come over and look at you—'"‘spyhapping”’.. Over the years, adult fisher- @ men have, in their own way, [i made the sport of fishing much "ge more complicated than it necd hem be. Fancy hand-tied flies, expen- sive floating lines, custom-made rods and imported reels carried about in high-powered boats b have tended to brand angling as wos fe the sport of kings. ‘With the multitude of creeks, BRt* tivers and lakes within walking MR. distance of most British Colum- bia communities, it shouldn't be fn 8.€., there's always this way. Ever since Tom Sawyer wus a boy, children have known that special rods, reels or lines are not necessary for a day of enjoy- ment on a riverbank. After ail, fishermen—young and old— enjoyed this sport thousands of years before the first sporting goods store opened. HANDFUL OF WORMS Most children know this. They know what they enjoy and they enjoy keeping the art of fishing simple and uncomplicated. From the time most children got loose near a puddle, they've known how to spend an enjoyable day walking down the middle of a clear, cold, gurgling stream. What children want to learn is how to coax a tiny hook and a battered worm inlo the watery nooks and crannies behind each boulder untit a wary trout makes afatal mislake. -Although Huckleberry Finn is said to have made a birch rod, . a too often, a few metres of nylon monofilament, some No. 12 hocks and a handful of worms. Add transportation to a clean creek and heaven has been created, SPECIAL SFOTS The Britis: Columbia Sport Fishing Regulations Synopsis, put out by the Fish and Wildlife Branch, lists dozens of creeks, rivers and lakes that are restric- led to fishermen under 16 or over 64 years of age. Boston Bar Creek, In the Coquihalla Valley north of Hope, Is 4 fine example ofa ‘frothing torrent’* that would excite the imagination of any youngster. The Ashnola River near Keremeos, while not re- stricted, Is another favorite “kid creek.*" However, whether the creeks are close or far, most young children need the patient super- vision of an experienced adult to help them find a safe location and get started properly, With a litte advance planning a creek for a kid, string and safety pin do the job, and some sound basic Instrue- today's youngsters prefer a sim- tions, the ‘‘supervisor’’ should ple rod, a tcel thal doesn't langle then be able to step buck and, easures| ION YRYyomaYs Kydsnpy while watching from a distance, let the fry do their awn thing. Children who have an oppor- tunity to spend a little time wandering along a creek bank can gain an increased respect for nature and themselves. The plants and insects that inhabit the water-edge envirunment can be fascinating. Watching the slow moving shadow of a trout in a quiet pool is & memorable experience, even for older kids. Just being alone at the water's edge without the feeling of obvious adult control can be an important and valu- able part of growing up. In the sounds of a swift-flow- ing stream the adult world fades away and a new world is created in which the child's imagination is king, Such un outing is an adven- ture tnost children would relate to their peers with pride.
