THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM May 24, 1977. TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL FROM: LEISURE ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE I. DEMOLITION OF WASHROOMS AT "OLD CENOTAPH" PARK — OPPOSITE AGGIF PARK. Tt was brought to the attention of the Comnittee by the Parks Superintendent that these washrooms are open 24 hours per day and are experiencing a fair amount of vandalism. Monies spent on these washrooms run in the neighbourhood of $5,000. 00 ($3,000.00 for vandalism, $2,000.00 for maintenance). Due to the amount of money being spent on these wash- rooms the Parks Superintendent has requested that they be demolished. However, the Committee has some reservations on whether to demolish or not to demolish; these are outlined below. . i. A 24 hour washroom service may be advantageous to the public and if a sign was erected on the Lougheed Highway indicating that nublic washrooms were available they would be put to their proper use rather than ccntinually being vandalized. 2. The washrooms at the Women's Centre would have to be utilized on a 24 hour basis and perhaps vandalism would be greater here due to the fact that there are more buildings. 3. Presently the washrooms at the Women's Centre are open every weekday until 5:00 p.m. and during the summer they remain onen until 10:00 p.m. when the pool maintenance crew close them down. Should the other washrooms be demolished, the traffic on the Women's Centre washrooms would become increasingly heavier. The Leisure Activities Committee felt that the demolition of the washrooms at Old Cenotaph Park should be discussed fully with the total council. II. VANDALISM - please see attached report (FOR INFORMATION ONLY) The Leisure Activities Committee has been very concerned over the vandalisn which has occured over the past year in the City Parks and at the two Recreation Centres. On May 10th, 1977 the Committee met with Inspector Young and Staff SergeantfRorle to discuss this matter at length. From this meeting several items were put forth as recommendations which will be acted upon. . Cont'd Page 2 ...
