March 25th, 1975 Mr. R.A.3. (Bob) Phillips, Executive Director, Heritage Canada, Ottawa, Ontario. Dear Sir: The City of Port Coquitlam {s desfrous to preserving one of its historic buildings. The Acgfe Hall as it is called was built in 1912 financed by civic funds and donations from private individuals and oraani- zations. For many years it served as a social centre for the majority of civic and organizational functions and included a school room, Many of our older residents feel a certain sentimental attachment to the building as well as a belief that it has a certain historic significance to our cormunity. Indeed, it 4s one of the few remaining buildings in our City connected with the past over which we have any control as to {ts use and future destiny. The bufldina is stil] used for many scheduled events such as church-spoasored binge, Sea Cadets, Baton Twirling Club, Dog Obedience Classes, Arts and Crafts classes including Pottery. In addition, the building is used on a rental basis by other organtzations for meetings and dances, The Hall fs also used as a storage centre for some city-owned materials and minor sports equipment. In recent years the butiding has been allowed to detertorate and there are some in the community who feel {t 1s an eyesore. The Fire Pre- vention Officer has ordered it closed as of May 31st, 1975. . In Hoverber 1989, an inspection of the hall was made and a copy of it is enclosed for your information and retention. Will you please send me the criteria your conmittee has established for preserving historfc buildings in order to evaluate whether our Aggte Hal] 1s indeed a heritage buflding, ey ; . “PReseee fat ara a -2- Personally, I believe the buflding to be of great historic value. One could travel from the Atl-atic to the Pacific and not com umn a structure as Aggie Hall. I have been informed that architecturally it is a "Victorian, Edwardian adaption of a Moorish theme”. I have no idea ff this is so. I do know, however, that with {ts past history, its nresent usage and its future potenzial it is surely worthy of consideration. Yours very truly, L.M. Traboulay, Alderman, Chatrman, Suilding & Protection.
