Gov't forks over more bucks for new secondary school B.C.’S FINANCE ministry has approved more than $31,000 in additional money for the Skeena Ju- nior replacement school, The $13 million con- struction project ran inte an unexpected cost nobody saw coming. The provincial: govern- ment raised the provincial sales tax by 0.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent earlier this year — after the contract was awarded but before construction actually began. It meant that businesses and others involved in the project who had bid based on the old sales tax faced higher costs when they began to purchase services and materials once work began. “That was something nobody could foresee,” school district official Ro- bert Gilfillan said. The Coast Mountains School District asked for the additional money to help offset the new costs. Meanwhile, the pro- ject’s builders are hoping October brings dry weather to the skies above Terrace. It’s time for the roof to go on, but soggy weather in September threatened to put the construction time line behind schedule. It’s a tight schedule. Construction began earlier this year and is supposed to be completed over spring break in March. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, Gilfil- lan said the job will be completed by the end of June at the latest. permits . available inside. Present these irnmediately to your wife for validation. SWAGGER CONSTRUCTION general foreman Mike Gray surveys the scenery atop the new Skeena Junior Secondary School, Those beams reaching up in the background will form the supports for the school's second storey roof. The school, located next to the existing Skee- na Junior, will open next September. The new school sur- vived a construction clampdown brought in shortly after the B.C. Lib- eral government was elec- ted in last year. Its approval marked the end of a years-long cam- -- paign ta replace the aging facility now being used. The old school will be demolished as part of the overall project contract.
